I have sorted my entire music collection so that all folders contain a cover.jpg (I used to use folder.jpg for this, but this was terrible since some software or windows itself kept making them hidden and making resized copies - making it utterly unpredictable and chaotic) and an artist.jpg image. That is every end folder containing actual music files. Most or all parent folders for multiple disc albums should have both image files too, but haven't confirmed all since it's not needed in foobar2k config. I also have cover art embedded in all files. I figured out I had to have an artist.jpg for a foobar2000 config, so I added them after the covers, and did not embed.
When I tried adding a few albums in JRiver it instantly got the cover art, either from the external file or the embedded one, but the artist.jpg seems to not be used anywhere. The default for artist view seems to be to display the cover art from the albums. But since I even see an option to get artist images from Last.fm there must be a way to display your own artist images as well? I spent like a week selecting, cropping, resizing, renaming and saving all those artist.jpg files and adding/correcting/fixing/improving all cover art. So I really wanna use those artist.jpg's I picked and fixed.
The way my foobar2k config does this now is basically that it takes the artist.jpg from the first folder with that artist, alphabetically sorted and uses that. The other folder would not need a file, but since I like to have flexibility I added the same to all folders containing files with that artist. So it would work even if I moved, deleted or changed something.
Please help in getting this sorted. =)
