problem with live shows and bootlegs
« on: January 20, 2015, 04:02:15 pm »

Hi,
I downloaded the trial version of MC20. The issue is the folder that contains all of the live shows I have downloaded from Etree. This is all important music to me and I am having trouble integrating them in to MC20. I had all of my CD rips of regular CD's in a file called Music. Inside this folder I had a subfolder called Live Music. The Live Music folder has sub folders for bands and then inside of the band folders, all of the live shows have individual folders for each show. In side of the show folders are the .wav files for each song played at the show.

When initially importing the Music folder in to MC20 I was not able to get the Music folder to import using auto import and the one time start up import (when the library is blank), did not import the Music folder. I got the Music folder imported using drag and drop but the Live Music folder did not import, just the CD rips. OK, so I moved the Live Music folder out of the Music folder and did another drag and drop and it imported all of the song files but did so without any of the folders for bands and the sub folders for the individual live show dates. MC20 just put all 3000 songs in to one folder called "unassigned" which is listed in the artists (top left hand side of MC20). There is no organization to the bands or the shows. All of the organization is still there in the Live Music folder so no damage done, but its not working with MC20 at all. Does any one know how to integrate the Live shows with MC20?

Thanks in advance for the help.

MC does not move files on import....You have some reading to do...check out this link

MC works with metadata (tags), not with the windows naming system

You can create views (files) that simulate the windows tree, so the folders will Be there the same as on your PC

Once you've sorted a file view, start looking into tagging...this is the real power behind organizing media properly.  If you have questions ask, it's a great community here

This is what I call another victim of WAV
Most of the time WAV is tagged badly or not tagged at all.
Hence you see "unassigned"

Fortunately you have a well designed file structure.
Select the "unassigned" tracks and right click and choose Library Tools > Fill properties from filenames.
Define the rules to translate the file structure into [album], [Artist] etc.
Success

Hello again,
Thank you for  all of the help. it is so much appreciated. I will play around with the file tagging and see if I can get this to work the way I want it to, and then report back on the end results. I am a total newbie to file playback and not really adept at computer navigation but the answers from you all have provided gave me a further insight. Especially helpful was Vincent Kars response as I was completely unaware of file tagging. His method will hopefully get these files tagged all at once instead of individually which would be too time consuming.

I have been collecting and trading live show files for the last 15 years and traded dats and CD-R's for the previous 5 years. I have about 2 terabytes of live concerts. The traders have not had any standards for file naming and even today, guys will name files at their whim. needless to say, all of these tracks will have to be brought in to conformity through tagging so that it can all be sorted and viewed in a way that makes them easily accessible. this is some of my most treasured music. I decided on JRiver due to the overwhelming popularity among audiophiles for its sound quality. Its going to be an interesting run but I'm looking forward to it.

Overall I'm impressed with how MC20 works with the standard CD rips from the CD collection(all done on DB Poweramp)

Thanks again for the help.
