MC20 : Algorithms for DSP "Surround Field" & similar VST plugins
« on: February 14, 2015, 10:44:52 am »

Hi everyone !  Just wondering what algorithms were used for the DSP Surround Fields in MC20. I especially enjoy the "Medium Enhancement" (with a little "Jazz Club" reverb) for headphone listening. I would love to find equivalent VST plugins (e.g. spatializers) that would give me similar results with a little more control over the parameters used.

I tried several VSTs already. I like for example 112dB Redline Monitor but not as much as the built-in MC processing. The ultimate tool seems to be Ircam SPAT but price is a little too high (for me). KVRAudio has several options listed. Looking for your input/experience with any of them. Thanks! Iam.

Hi and thanks for your reply! I did try TB Isone... Really one of the best ones out there AFAIK.
Yes, Ircam people don't make anything easy... or cheap  ;) But Hear v3 is affordable.
I already have a few iLok keys in my studio. I might give Spat and Hear a try. Will report here.

The main issue with trying to use a VST plug-in for this is that Media Center locks the downmixing process to the first processing step, so if you are using headphones the plug-in only receives a 2 channel input.
Unless it is designed to for a 2 channel input (e.g. Redline Monitor) most headphone plugins don't work correctly, as they expect a multichannel input.

with JRiver MC you can insert VST-main Plogue for example.
Inside Plogue you put other VST, TB Isone etc. Now you have as many inputs and outputs your AD DA supports (I have 60 in 60 out).
You mix what you want.

You can also go completely outside MC with VST-capable virtual cables such as the ones from VB Audio https://nirklars.wordpress.com/2014/04/26/realtime-digital-audio-processing-using-vst-plugins-in-programs-without-vst-support/ or DDMF's VAS  http://www.virtualaudiostream.com/ .

Here is another VST plugin for enhanced headphone listening. Simpler but much easier to configure than TB Isone:
