Images - Sorting
« on: February 09, 2015, 07:03:54 am »

Hey,

My photo/image folder structure is like this:

Pictures
...2014
......Event/Location - Month (so "Wedding - January" for example)
...2015
......Event/Location - Month

And the full path would be something like this: \\nasserver\pictures\2014\Wedding - January

I then have a library field that works out just the foldername from the full path (so "Wedding - January") and this is what I use for display.

This is not ideal because I also have something like "Christmas - December", which shows first because "C" is before "H", even though January is before December.

Any genius ways to get round this?  I don't want to sort based on date taken, because you could have events that span 2 months.  Can you give an album (in this case a whole folder) a date tag?

Thanks

Maybe instead of the date taken, you could put a month in front.

Or if that doesn't work, there is a program called Basic Renamer which can insert fields to/from files/directory and you could sort on that?

Just some ideas.

Why couldn't you add a pre-configured field like "Series" that is not normally used by Media Type = Image, and add a value (like "12" for December photos, etc.) then add "Series" to your sort display criteria.

Then you add this field to your "Rules for File Display". I'm assuming you use Theater View to display your images. If not, perhaps you could add more detail as to how you use MC with regards to viewing these images.

Yes, this is possible, but first you have some tagging to do.
When you select a picture in normal view, click tag under it, or select tag in the action pane.
When the tag window/pane opens on the left, at the left side of the word TAG on top, you see a small icon, this is the tools
button, when clicking it you can select 'also show...", select with this only the tags you need,
like 'event' 'year' 'date', whatever you want.
For the tagging, go to Images, Files on the left, browse to the folder like /wedding - January,
select all the pictures in it, I use the right button on the mouse and hold it down, move your mouse, and select like
this the pictures you want. When selected, click tag in the action pane, select event and write in this, wedding.
All the selected pictures will get 'wedding' as tag, so make your tags like you want, this goes fast once you know how to do it.
Afterwards you can select in normal view or another what you want to show to the viewers, in tree view or another.
I hope that I explained it good enough, I'm not native English, but dutch.
Have fun tagging.

I use a date prefix method for my folders.

For example:

2014 01 wedding
2014 12 Christmas
2015 01 New Year Party
2015 01 Mum's Birthday
2015 02 Snow scenes

Thanks all.

Some good ideas here... I'm sure I can sort something out.
