A Few Questions Before I Purchase My Master Licence
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:28:10 pm »

Hi All,

I have just installed JRiver I had heard of it in the past but for various reasons never tried it.  I like it enough that I am willing to pay for the "Master License" even though day one of my trial isn't even over yet.  Obviously I am not that well acquainted with all it's features but it does what I want works well with my headphone amp and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.  As I use all three operating systems this is amazing.

However I have a few questions I would like to ask before I go ahead and purchase my master license:

My First Question:

I have read that you can install the master license on as many machines as you wish  (within reason) I would be installing on 3 to 4 machines eventually but as I understand it only within the first 20 days after the purchase is made.  As I am planning on getting a new Mac Pro and possibly upgrading my PC in the next few months this would prevent me from purchasing JRiver now.

I would like to purchase it now and start sorting my music as a current iTunes user my meta data options are limited and I have over 20,000 albums to sort it will take some time.  Not being able to install on my new Mac Pro  when it arrives would be a deal breaker.

My Second Question

Does the trial version of MC contain all the features of the paid for full version?  I no with some trial software there are "paywalls" where some features are restricted and not available to trial users. Although I can't see this being the case with JRiver as it makes no sense for your business model.

My Third Question

This is perhaps deserves it's own thread but I'll ask here and I can always ask again later.  I listen to classical music though headphones I listen to nothing else and I never use speakers.

Could someone give me some advice on configuring JRiver for use with a headphone amp and high-end headphones?

Finally

Now it seems I may be able to ditch iTunes would you think it worth my time to re-rip my collection to uncompressed FLAC?  I currently use AIFF files and iTunes.

Thanks

There is no time limit, what you may be thinking of is the .mjr file that is sent to you. This is used after your first computer, for the other computers you plan on license, as it will not take away from your 10 restores for the year.(don't worry about the restores) The .mjr file is only good for 15 days.

My Second Question

YES the trial version is what you see is what you get!

My Third Question

This i have no clue.

Finally

This is a personal issue but if it were me I would choose flac.

Thanks

Good Luck and welcome to JRiver Interact and MC itself.

1. The license can be used on as many machines as you personally own.
The key file that is sent with your purchase is valid for 14(?) days and can be used to activate any number of systems.
Once the key file expires, you can create another - up to 10 a year.

2. The trial version is fully-featured.

3. The only thing different with headphones is that you may wish to enable the Headphone DSP Plug-in.
The basic setup guide is here: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Getting_Started

4. You can convert AIFF to FLAC or any other lossless/uncompressed format at any time without quality loss.
iTunes is not a secure ripping tool however, so you are not guaranteed to have a 1:1 copy of the disc with your AIFF files if you used iTunes to rip them.
So it's up to you whether you want to re-rip the CDs or not. FLAC would be my recommended format.

Looks like for the master license you can restore a license up to 20 times a year so it shouldn't be an issue. Of course if you ever use up all your restores all you need to do is post here and the developers will reset it for you.

Thank you all very much for your replies that has solved my all of my questions and once my trial expires I will upgrade to the Master Licence.

I used dBpoweramp to rip all of my music to AIFF I wouldn't trust iTunes.

Thanks again all. :)

It's a really rare problem, but just post and we'll take care of you.

You should try MC for ripping.  The secure mode is really neat in my opinion.

You can just convert your tracks to FLAC then.

dBpoweramp includes a batch converter that will do this while verifying the conversions at the same time.
Or you could play the AIFF files in MC directly if you wanted to.
