Need to understand how to stream video to projector
« on: March 03, 2015, 09:21:18 am »

Hello,
I'm haven't yet set up a jriver PC, I certainly will. I'm having quite a high end audio and video setup. While I do understand the various options for the audio stream, I will stream audio using Ethernet DAC (no PC in the theatre room), I don't get the picture for the video side. I'd like to achieve the same kind of setup, that is stream the video to an Oppo reader for instance, that would act as a player connected using HDMI to the video projector (VW500ES).
I read a lot of information on jriver web site, including the Red October article, I could not find some block diagram that would explain what is achievable and the various options.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
Thank you

Why not just use any Wireless HDMI or HDBaseT system from your PC to the VW500? You will have a better rendering than using the Oppo (even if it's a pretty good renderer)
Whatever you do, separating video from audio will generate synchronisation problems.

Thanks for feedback. I was not aware of the emerging and promising HDBaseT standard. All rooms are CAT6 wired. What would then be needed at both ends. I would imagine a specific board on the PC side, and a HDBaseT to HDMI box at the other end?
As far as synchronization is concerned, can we assume that once it has been measured, it will be always the same value? If yes, is there a provision within JRiver to shift audio by this amount?

Depending on your projector, you may also be able to use a DM i/o port on the projector.  Crestron and Extron both make converters that go from DVI or HDMI to DM and vice versa.

Generally you need to use shielded Cat6 for intermediate-to-long runs, however.

You will generally have the best compatibility and results if you can connect a video output on your PC directly to the projector, and not stream through any intermediary device (such as the Oppo).

When you stream through any other device, then you aren't using MC to "play" the file, and you don't get most of the benefits of MC's playback engine.  You are playing the file on the device, subject to all of its compatibility and fiddlyness, and just using MC to control which file(s) the device plays.

Thanks glynor. I agree on the objective. The projector is the VW500ES from Sony (true 4K). So what would be the practical solution to link the projector and the PC (length on the range of 10m)? What kind of graphic card would I need to be compatible with that resolution?

Currently there's only NVIDIA GTX 960 that provides a decent support for 4k video, you only need an HDMI output with a HDMI cable it's pretty usable. If you need more than 15m, investigate the solutions I've enumerated earlier.

I think Hendrik has done an on depth evaluation of the GTX 960. During GDC there certainly will be some interesting announcements.

That projector doesn't have a direct DM input, so you'll have to convert to/from HDMI.  Assuming you aren't already using a compatible matrix switch (such as a Crestron Digital Media processor and switch), then it probably isn't worth it to go there.  If you're going more than around 10m, especially if you're going to install it in-wall and use it for 4K output, you might want to investigate one of two options:

* A high-quality HDMI TP Extender, like this one: http://www.extron.com/product/product.aspx?id=dtphdmi230tx&s=4
* Since it is only 10m, you can probably just run a high-quality HDMI cable directly.  Get something Plenum rated for in-wall installation, and you'll usually get a higher quality cable (and make it more fire-safe too): http://www.startech.com/Cables/Audio-Video/HDMI/Plenum-Rated-HDMI-Cable-35ft~HDPMM35

I'd strongly recommend avoiding any of the wireless solutions if you care about quality.  I've tested (this year) systems for high-end ($10k+ for just the wireless extenders) conference room installs, and they all compress colors and are extremely susceptible to noise.  People keep telling me they're "okay now" but they're all liars as far as I can tell (or they aren't judging quality properly).

Thanks everybody for all the valuable info provided.
I definitely care about quality, as you might have guessed, Wireless technologies are definitely out of question (except for remote control). I'm in the IT business and and keep telling to my clients that WI-FI is nice for mobility, not for a stable, hassle free solution where you care about performance and stability. This is why everything is wired with HQ CAT6 cable. If I can avoid any interface box, I will. The cable that has been mentioned definitely fits the need. I will double check the length.
@rlebrette: could you provide the link of the 960 test?

You can have a look to this review:

A topic about the 9xx family:

And several topics on avsforum and doom9, I can't retrieve the posts, but if Hendrik is looking at this post he will be able to give you the pointers.

Are there better suppliers than others as far as GTX 960 is concerned?

Both the Asus STRIX and MSI Gaming 2G cards are completely silent until the GPU temp reaches ~60C.

Most of them are really within a hair of one another:
