I am using the Noire skin. With either ASIO or WASAPI, the DSP button doesn't turn blue. I remember seeing blue there but at some point blue stopped appearing. What might be the cause?

If you click on that audio path button (the one that used to turn blue), what does it say?  Blue means that no processing is being done, the audio path dialog will tell you what kind of processing is happening.

Input: 44.1kHz 16bit 2ch from source format FLAC
Changes: Resample from 44.1kHz to 48 kHz
Output: 48kHz 32bit 2ch using ASIO (direct connection)

Perhaps this is related to my issue but when I look at the Windows control panel/sound, my DAC is selected as the default playback device. But when I play music from MC 20, there is no tick moving up and down (which does move up and down when I play music using iTunes).

The audio path shows that you're resampling the output from 44.1KHz to 48KHz.  That's a DSP change which is why the button is not blue.  You can change the resampling settings in the output format panel of DSP studio.

Changing resampling to no change brought back the blue button. Thank you.

Do you have wisdom to dispense regarding the Windows control panel thing I mentioned? Why doesn't the sound bar doesn't light up when I play music through MC20 but does when I play music through iTunes?

Your audio path suggests that you're using ASIO as an output in JRiver.  That's a "direct" connection, which bypasses the windows mixer entirely (which is a good thing).  My guess would be that the windows driver in the control panel shows no output because it's been "cut out" by JRiver. 

Itunes just uses default windows audio to my knowledge, and sends audio to the mixer like any other program.
