Dolby digital adds about 1 second of latency to WDM driver
« on: December 30, 2014, 07:39:42 am »

I expect encoding to dolby digital would add some latency, but it seems to add about a second of latency for me. Isn't that a bit on the high side?

The majority of audio encoders are not meant to run in realtime with zero latency. I'm afraid this is pretty normal.

I checked with a xbox one, it seems to encode to dolby digital on the fly, and I have also seen soundcards that does the same. Of course using the CPU is a bit different, but modern CPUS are fast, and 1 second is a lot of latency. Seems like there should be a good potential for reducing the latency to something more manageable?

If you can control the latency, then you have no problem. You can just ask the sound-system to deliver audio quicker.
But we do not control this. And our encoder just works the way it does. Its possible to implement a low-latency encoder, but we have to use what we have access to.

Pretty simple here.....Years ago, I spent months looking for a player with a good auto import feature. JR had it, and haven't looked back since.

Reason I stayed.....handles huge libraries, smartlists, and the tagging features
