Promise Smartstor NS4600
« on: March 08, 2012, 02:55:04 am »

Hi all, I have used a Promise Smartstor NS4600 NAS for over threee years now. Apart from some niggles and a few failed drives it has performed OK. Now the power supply has failed and as it is out of warrenty Promise can't replace it. The power supply is a laptop type one tucked in the NAS underneath. Promise support says my best option is to replace the NAS (£400) with another and put the drives back in in the original order. Can you believe it, "sorry we can't sell you a new power supply as it is not a price listed item".
So I asked them for the pin outs for the mini din plug. Nope we don't know that information. Pathetic.

If you have one of these units be affraid!!!

Also if you have one of these units and can give me the pin outs that would save me a few ££££'s.

I wish I could find the Edac EA11003E-120 power supply for sale seperately but no luck so far. I can't even get Edac support to tell me the pin outs!!!!

At least I took a backup (2.7Tb) in January but of course have put lots on it since then ;(

Having the same issue, the parts are not useable replaceable I don't get why they can't send you parts. Its very easy to get to everything and the parts look like they would be user replaceable.

I'd watch the pinout on that because my P1 and P2 are voltages while P3 and P4 are ground.  I'll never buy another Promise product again and will spread the word, especially if I find out that they customized the pin out like this.

I just had a similar problem with the Promise SmartStor DS4600 that looked like a dead power supply issue but was "something else" more stupid and unexpected.

I unplugged the apparently dead DS4600 to check the power supply (link to the manual with replacement instructions --> http://www.xander.com.hk/product/product_manual/prod_manual_221.pdf).

Flipping the device upside down, through the vents I could see a green light on the power supply was on. Thinking this was odd, I waited a few minutes for the light to go out.

I then replugged the DS4600 in and it worked fine.

Check for this in case it's a common issue.

As a general comment, I've found this to be a very sensitive device and it will shut itself off for no apparent reason. However, this is the first time I ever had an issue like this.
