As I said I really hate Real, don't have it, don't want it but would like to be able to deal with the real formats. Is there any way at all to listen to their formats without having any of their software on my system??

Ooh,
That might not be true,

I found a plug-in for Winamp v2 ages ago that let it play real media.

I was soooo happy because I also hate real. with a vengence, their software sucks!! :)
Remember on my old machine like 3-4 years back, it used to crash it every time - BLOATWARE RESOURCE GRABBER!!

Other than the less than subtle and extremely annoying popups along with the media type grabbing...I liked RealJukebox (and RealPlayer). Nowhere near the power that MJ has (can you feel it?) today, it still had a good interface and was also good at playlist creation. Had RealOne briefly (til I saw the light) and it also was decent (just that the shortcomings listed above were amplified 1010).

here you get the point:
there is the company ,SCONRFULL
And the softwares : not bad .

RealJukebox was good
Player as well.
I did not remember about the pop-up. Maybe because i had a free plus version.
RealJukebox was quite easy to set to beheave as a civilized person.
Player needed more work to get the same result.....
ZoneAlarm a great toll  to help them beheave....

Since 2 weeks i run RealOne ,custom install, not the fast one and a look to ALL options in preferences.
Do not have any problems ,and i kill most of the pop-up with my firewall.
But they still play dirty: the free player has only mp3 up to 96 kps. They tell you to upgrade to get bigger rates.
But ,in fact you can get FREE up to 320 kps. You just need to dig they site , somewhere you can download it. It was the same with RealJukebox.
Of cause they ask you for your shoes size , what you eat for lunch ect , but it is easy to get all without registering.
So softwares not bad ,company the most detestable on the weeb.
I would NEVER EVER give them one cent of my money.

Now ,if you really need it ,install Player 8 , set it carrefully ,set programs from Windows Explorer, set your firewall and you would even forget you have it
