Does Media Center need to be running on the server to be accessed from a client? I have a Windows network with several workstations. One installation of Media Center on a workstation is configured as the Media Server. I can read the library from another workstation only when Media Center is running as an application on the "server". It doesn't seem to work as a service but requires the application to be running. Is this how it is intended to work?

Yes, this is how it works. You cannot run MC as a service unless there is a work around that I'm not aware of.

Just in case you are not aware, you can run MC without the GUI by launching 'Media Server' instead of 'JRiver Media Center 20' which will just run the library server with no GUI. There will just be an icon in the system tray.

  • Where did I put my teeth?

In MC's startup options, tell it to run Media Server on Windows start.
