Clarification: I'm not an editor.  I just occasionally play one at work (where I'm an engineer).  I just happen to be one of the better writers among the engineers in my group, which isn't saying much!  :)

Honestly, my better half, who is an editor/proof reader, would have cringed at some of that. Sorry.
Editors are a tough crowd.  Your wife might like this article, which appeared in The New Yorker earlier this year:

That was a really great video, Jim.

The video is decent.  It's better than some kickstarter videos I've seen.  It has some fairly amateur elements to it though:

You can see someone recording the picture on the TV in the reflection.  It's rather obvious.  The camera being used hunts for focus on the screen going in and out.

Audio on the video is STRONGLY left biased.  It's probably +15 dB in the left channel as compared to the right.

I'm not sure if Kickstarter customers care if the presentation is professional or not; this doesn't feel all that professional.

The overall message isn't terribly exciting to be honest.  It's alright.  It's a decent visual overview of the platform.  The VERY end of the video starts to get the viewer excited as Jim himself becomes excited.  But then it ends, and so does the excitement that was *just* starting to build.

Don't take this as overly negative.  I'm trying to be just straight honest about my impressions without giving false enthusiasm, or being overly critical.  It's just how I see it.  As you probably know, I'm a BIG FAN of JRiver MC.  So this is meant as constructive criticism.

Brian.

Definitely -- I'm in
I am looking for a full DRM/Copy Once replacement for WMC that can utilize my HDHomerun Prime on Comcast. I'm not happy with the Silicondust DVR solution.

same, I am on TWC and have been happy with WMC for years - looking for similar functionality going forward.

really happy to see the direction planned for the project - video is great as well, will definitely support the kickstarter

I posted this on the Kickstarter site in the feedback window... but just in case you'd rather address it here:
If we fund the project at the $60 or $70 level, will we get immediate use of the JRMC21 software? We will have paid effectively for a license. It would be nice to have the time waiting for the TV Plus add-on to get acquainted with the software, and work out any kinks in implementing it in our home system(s) so that we can "hit the ground running" so to speak when the TV Plus add-on goes live.
Thanks!
EDIT: I think the typical Kickstarter model may make this request difficult to fulfill.  Usually, a pledge does not actually get paid (i.e. the person's money is not taken) until the Kickstarter is complete (or something like that).  But I dunno really, I've never played on the other side of KS projects.

I think you would want to purchase MC21 from jriver.com and then purchase the TVPlus add-on from Kickstarter.

It would actually make a lot of sense for those who purchase the higher priced Kickstarter options to get immediate licenses for MC21 and then get the TV Plus package later when it's ready.  Those who are going with the more expensive options are typically going to be new customers as those of us contributing just for the TV Plus portion presumably already have a license.  As Kieran suggests, getting the license now would give those new customers a chance to get up to speed with JRiver while they wait for the TV Plus option to be finished.  Even if many of those new customers can't use the TV functionality without TV Plus, they can start using MC for the rest of their needs and go through the bulk of the learning curve while they wait.  And those purchasing the more expensive option are also going to get you closer to fully funding the Kickstarter, which is usually the point of having the higher priced options.

What would be the reason(s) for not giving those who make the larger contributions licenses right away?

Edit: I'm not overly familiar with Kickstarter, but my understanding is that if the project reaches it's funding goal, all the backers' credit cards get charged when the time on the Kickstarter expires while if the project does not reach it's funding goal, nobody gets charged anything.  If the project reaches it's funding goal, it would make sense to provide backers who went with the more expensive options with their MC licenses sometime soon after they are charged and then deliver TV Plus to them when it's ready at a later date.  This gives the backers something to show for their contribution, while JRiver gets the funding it needs to proceed with the project.

Greynolds put it nicely in his post.  But to add to what he said, I don't really want to buy a $50 or $70 license and then pay another $20 for the Kickstarter, when I could buy the bundle via Kickstarter for much less.  I mean at $70, you're basically giving away the TVPlus add-on with purchase of a Master License.  That's a sweet deal.

If you've got customers who have already given you their money, I don't see why you wouldn't provide the portion of the bundle they paid for that's already available and fully functional.

Maybe if the Kickstarter payment system is complicating things, you could offer the license via jriver.com at a reduced rate for people who paid $20 for the Kickstarter add-on, so that their net cost was the same as the Kickstarter bundle.

There is a Catch 22 here.

If someone buys MC and TVPlus from Kickstarter, they won't get the MC21 license unless the campaign is funded.

But they also won't get a license until 30 days have elapsed, even if it is funded.

MC has a 30 day trial, which can be used while you're waiting to see if the campaign is funded.

We can still change the "rewards", so if anyone sees a better way, please say so.

We could offer a coupon that would let someone purchase MC from JRiver at a similar discount.  But they would be committed even if the campaign wasn't funded.
