Problem with .mkv video files - fast forward freezes MC
« on: July 30, 2015, 03:59:20 pm »

During the last week I have been having problems with .mkv video files.
It happened first on my HTPC (i5 CPU, 8GB memory, 256 SSD) and then on my main PC (i7 CPU, 16GB memory, 256 SSD) , both running Windows 8.1 64 bit, both on the same Gigabit switch.
The files are on a Synology 1813+ NAS on the same switch.
A movie starts fine , bit when I advance it to a later point MC freezes. If I wait for like one minute it may resume playing, but some times it doesn't and MC simply hangs.
If I move the file on a local disc, I am getting the same problem more or less.
On the same files, local or on the Synology, VLC jumps from one time position to another in a split second with no problems at all.
Looking at the performance monitor, I can see that MC is taking around 135 Mbytes of RAM memory, which is OK I guess, but looking at the network use while MC has frozen, I am looking at transfer rates in the range of 75Mbytes/sec. 75 Mbytes/sec for a minute is 4.5 Gbytes, half the size of the whole file. 113 Mbytes/sec is the maximum data transfer rate I am getting between the NAS and the PCs with FTP or Windows file copy.
Has there been a change in how MC buffers video files? Or maybe how it implements pointers to specific positions of a video file?
On the same files, local or on the Synology, VLC jumps from one time position to another in a split second with no problems at all.

Any ideas?
