Synchronize + Conversion rewrites all files every time
« on: January 15, 2004, 11:12:04 pm »

I have MC9 (latest version as of this posting). I am trying to synchronize my library with on-the-fly conversion (MP3@256 -> OGG to save file space) to an iRiver ihp-120 which just looks like a fixed drive to MC. But if I add files to the playlist which I am using to synchronize and then repeat the synchronization, it starts over and re-converts all of the files. It can't seem to tell that it doesn't need to update the majority of the existing files. For my 5000 song library, this is a multi-day process for my old 800MHZ processor. If this is the intended behavior, then you really should rename the feature as "Copy" because "Synchronize" implies a certain level of intelligence behind the process which simply isn't there.

Also, while I'm on my soap box, I'd like to mention that I find the use of the Playlist name as the directory name on the portable to be rather annoying. I would like more control over the destination directories for synchronization. Make it customizable instead of the few choices on the menu. I use [Album Artist (auto)] for the directories of my main library because it helps with the 'Various Artists' problem. I'd like to do the same on my portable.

jlar310,

The on the fly conversion will be modified soon to detect and skip duplicates during sync for players other than iPod where this is already enabled.

In regards to the control over directories, right click on the drive letter and use the 'rearrange upload folders'  option to auto create folders on the player. If you want more options than those already there, this can be added in the future.

Hi Steve,

that's good news....

here are a few more things I'd like to see (and hopefully enough other that you're going to implement them ;-) ):

- when synchronising, put everything in one folder (e.g. \My Music) and leave everything else alone. (currently MC seems to delete any files it doesn't know off, including *.doc in my \data folder)

- when synching playlists, create playlists.m3u (or whatever the user configured) in (e.g.) \Playlists and still put the music files in \My Music

- keep the option to generate \...\[AlbumArtist(Auto)]\Album folders.

- add an option to start an external program once the synching is finished
(and/or)
- include the stuff that ID3Browse currently does for me ;-)
http://shanebrinkmandavis.com/homepage/ID3Browse/v2.0/
this great utility allows me to create a complete tree of playlists that mimics a database (or MC's tree based media views)

just ideas (and hopes)

Ingo

p.s.: I'm using an Archos JBMM, drive letter based, no database,  playlist support (even mixed audio/jpg lists)
p.p.s.: one thing that would be really great as well, but probably only for archos jbmm users: this gadget can display cover art included in mp3s as a background, but it's resizing capabilities are verry limited (only 1/4,1/3,1/2, 1x, 2x, 3x,4x). so resizing coverart during sync to the 'best fit' size would be great (just dreaming ;-)  )

Will this happen in MC9 or will it only be in MC10?

Yes, I know about the 'rearrange upload folders' menu. The choices there are not quite sufficient

You didn't comment on the non-configurable use of the playlist name as the root folder for synchronization. Any hope of a better option there?

The on the fly conversion changes will be for MC 10 only.

when synching playlists, create playlists.m3u

I cannot assume that all players that show as removable drives will recognize .m3u.

This can be modified.

that's ok (for me ;-) )

that's why I added this /configurable/ thing ;-)
There's at least one player (Siemens SL42/45 GSM phone with integrated MCC card reader) that kind of needs to have a playlist (doesnt play more than ~20 files without it)

This can be modified.
Is this currently a user option? or is this just the indication that you're going to change this?

Ingo

p.s. still hoping for real playlists on my archos ;-)
