OT - J River guys, how far away from you is...
« on: April 15, 2004, 11:04:44 am »

MidWest Mountaineering
309 Cedar Avenue South
Minneapolis, MN

I will be there Friday (and Saturday) the 7th of May for a clinic.  I was wanting to stop by and visit you guys, if you don't mind, and just say "Hi".  Plus I offered to buy Jim a drink last week, and I really want to follow through on that offer.

Just thought I'd ask.

PM me if more appropriate.

Sure.  Stop by.  Just call when you know about when.

Midwest Mountaineering is about two miles from here.  We're up river from them.

MidWest Mountaineering

That's a great store, they have everything and a really good staff to help with questions.

What kind of clinic is it, if you don't mind me asking?
Are you presenting or attending?

Here's the link...

http://www.backpacker.com/bootcamp

I'm in the early/mid stages of planning my round-the-world trip.  A friend and I are tentatively planning on departing in October/November of this year.  Everything I own is currently for sale, which feels great, and wierd at the same time.  We are planning on doing as much overland travel as possible, including MUCH walking, so I figure I need to do everything I can to make sure my boots fit as well as humanly possible.

Good to know the store employees are nice and friendly.  Thanks for the tip.

I'll see you guys next month (I'll call first, but I'm shooting for a 3-4pm arrival at your office)

Thanks again.

PS anyone want a visitor from Nebraska sometime during the next 5-10 years? :)

Any idea when you will reach China? I'd be happy to show you around a bit.

Thanks for the offer.  I would LOVE that.  I'm starting to try to learn a little mandarin Chinese (mostly from my favorite chinese restaraunt owner).

We are thinking it might be 2-3 years before getting to China, but our biggest goal in this adventure is we REFUSE to have any sort of schedule.  We will stay somehwere as long as we enjoy it, and will leave when we're tired of it.  We're heading to Montana to visit some friends, then heading south through the southwest US, then down through Mexico, then Central America, and on to South America.  We figure we will either fly or take a boat  to New Zealand, then to Australia, then to southeast Asia.  My best guess is a couple years 'til we reach Asia, but I would be thrilled if you were still interested in hosting a couple of tired travelers when we do finally arrive.  If you wouldn't mind sending me your email address, I'll keep you posted on my travels.

We do plan to hit some internet cafe's along the way, so I plan to stay in touch with the board, as least infrequently, so we can stay in touch that way if you'd prefer.

Thanks again for the kind offer, I really appreciate it.

Jim, Matt, Steve, etc.  I'm leaving in an hour or so, and figure to get to your office around 4pm.

Want me to bring anything?

If you can get here any earlier than 4, that'd be great.  If not, no big deal.

See you soon.

Truly thank you.  I will take you up on that.  I would love to see China in a way that tourists never will.

I will reply later to your PM.

Thanks again, and I'll be looking forward to hearing some stories about your last 20 years.  I want to know what's in store for me. :D

Justin, were you able to meet with our friends at J River?

If so, how about a short report?

Good luck in your adventures.  Sounds like a great way to enjoy life.

I was, and I'll put up some pics, and a little story (for lack of a better term) probably tomorrow.

I just got back last night, and then I had over 200 eBay auctions end today, so i haven't had much free time.  i'm guessing I won't have much tomorrow either, since I sold 181 of those items, and need to get them shipped promptly.

But, I made some cash, so that's always good.

Good night.

Story of my visit
« Reply #17 on: May 13, 2004, 03:01:26 pm »

So, I got most of my sold items shipped; well, the ones that have paid me anyway.  Wow, does that take way too much time. :o

I made it to J River's vast complex, where they are obviously working diligently on a scheme to "RULE THE WORLD!" as Matt kept saying.  It was making me a little nervous, actually.  He just kept screaming down the vast corridors of the J River gigantic megaplex of intricate and complex underground tunnels and large iron doors with retinal scanners.  I asked Matt what that was all about, but he just said, "You'll find out soon enough, everyone will find out soon enough", and started wringing his hands together with a sinister smile perched on his lips.  I asked where Jim was, but I was told he was on a secret mission of reconnaissance, and he would not be around that afternoon.

Peter was a very pleasant chap with a great Australian? accent.  He was on his way out to a soccer match (I'm sure that was a euphemism for something).

I did get a glimpse of Steve in his office, he had all of the media players you can imagine, all lined up like little toy soldiers.  He kept referring to them by their 'rank', and giving them 'orders'.  I pretended not to notice, for fear of what might happen to me.  At this point, I was quite deep in their 'lair' and was a little concerned about my ability to escape.  Eventually, I just 'saluted' him, and told him "thank you, sir" and quickly slipped away.

It was pretty cool to see the roller derby rink they had for "relaxation therapy", as the sign above kept flashing.  Matt asked if I was ready for a match, but I told him my leg had fallen asleep during the drive, and I didn't think I would have much balance on the 'jet-powered rollerblades' he offered to let me use.

I did see a few other people 'milling about', but they would not respond to me without 'permission', which no one would give them.  Apparently, they knew something, and Matt was afraid they might 'spill the beans.'  They looked scared, but maybe they were just tired.

Eventually Matt offered to take us to a 'local hangout' to 'shoot some pool'.  I was afraid of what that might actually mean.  As it turns out, it actually meant playing pool, which was quite a relief.  I was really afraid it might be another term for some sort of 'torture chamber' (which is kinda how it felt, as badly as I played).  We had a couple of drinks, shot a few games of pool (Matt & I kicked a**), told stories, and laughed.  It was quite pleasant.  Until it was time to go.  Matt told me that for security reasons he had to 'erase every memory I had of my visit', but I ran away, screaming and darting back and forth while being chased by the 'gang'.  I would not be here today to tell you my story, if it hadn't been for the fact that my friend was not as fast as I, and they caught him, as I just kept running.  I feel bad about not trying to help, but there was nothing I could do.  He was surrounded, and the machines they used on him looked too scary to mess with.  I'm just glad he's slow, and I'm not.  I was finally able to take him home with me, but not until after they were done with him.  He's not quite himself anymore, but he says he doesn't feel any 'pain', but he also says he doesn't feel anything.  I've tried asking him what happened, but he just smiles and says, "Media Center is the greatest thing ever!".

I've posted some pictures on my website, if you'd like to see the pure evil of the ordeal.  I'm afraid to say any more, since I think they might have my address from registration.  Oh, well, if something happens to me, you guys know where to look, although, I wouldn't recommend it, you might be next.

http://www.travelcommentary.com/images/J%20River/

The pics are in no particular order, and there are tiff and jpg files, so look closely at the file size before clicking.

Matt is obviously Matt
John is Gately
Bob, well I'm not sure what Bob does, but he's played WAY too much '9 Ball', he kept sinking the 8 ball and smiling (Unfortunately, it's a bad thing)
Mark is my friend
Chris is me  8)
Midwest Mountaineering is where the "Boot Camp" was held
I have no idea what MIXED BLOOD is or means, but it was about a 1/4 mile from Midwest Mountaineering (I think it's one of J River's secret 'labs', but no one will confirm that)
Finally, Skyline are shots of the Minneapolis Skyline at 6am.

Okay, back to sleep now.

It's not the files, really, it's his server.  It seems to have a max bandwidth of a whooping 16 KB/s!!!   :o  (At least, that is what I am currently measuring it at.)  ;)

Oh yeah, cable is great to download, but not so much for upload.

Maybe I can just mail them all to Jim, and he can do it for me ?

Thank Jim,

Sorry everyone (well, everyone that cares), I'm going home now.  I've had a bad day.  I'm gonna try again tomorrow.  But, tonight, I'm drinkin'

PS  Jim's just saying they're lies to throw everyone off his trail. ;)

Thanks for the post Chris.  It was a fun evening.

And for everyone else, everything he said is true except the part about me being good at pool.  That's just a cheap lie so we'll implement features he wants :P

Well, I think I have some small pics up for review now.  I didn't bother with larger pics since my server uploads so slow.  If someone wants to see larger images, just let me know & I'll either upload them to a new page, or email the pics.

Enjoy.

FYI -

Mixed Blood is a theater company that focuses on African-American productions, they have a very good reputation.  Though I can definitely see how the name on the building seems a little creepy if you don't know what it's for.

It looks like you went to city billiards, their motto is Shoot Pool, Not People.  Very cool place, good beers and other games besides pool as well.

bjsolem,

Thanks for the info.  Yeah, the Mixed Blood thing was a little disturbing, funny, but wierd.

I did not know the name of the place we went for pool, but the tables were nice, and the atmosphere was good as well, although, that was pretty much a function of the company we had there, very pleasant.
