JRiver is being schtum and sod all

Recently though, JRiver has been keeping schtum about what's going on over there. That's annoying, and it comes across as them doing sod all, perhaps being on holiday.

Ph,
Thanks for writing.  Letters are always appreciated here.  Even if I don't know what "shtum" and "sod all" mean, though I can guess from the context.

Do you feel like we're keeping quiet?  Loafing?

You're correct and I have to say how pleased I am to find that someone's noticed.

I went away this weekend.  It was a nice few days away from the briar patch.  I saw the Pacific (an ocean we have here).  There were big waves.  I saw fish.  Some were behind glass.  I looked down at the earth from 32,000 feet and felt fortunate.

It was a long weekend because of Memorial Day (another thread here explains).  It's the beginning of summer and we have to pack life in for the few months that things slow down here.  Beer, brats, baseball, baloney sandwiches, mustard.....

I live in a place that isn't very green for about 6 months each year.  I like it.

At work, we are thinking right now.  There isn't much else we can do.  We've got a couple of big fish in our boat and we're waiting to see if we eat them or they eat us.  It should be clear in a few months.  We're legally bound to keep quiet in the meantime.

The business we're in has been moving at a very slow pace.  We're trying to keep up.

What happens next will be this.

1.  We'll release an alpha of the primitive skeleton of the next version.  You won't be impressed.

2.  We will begin to layer on features.  About half our work will be in improving areas like image handling, theater view, and file management.

3.  We'll add document handling so that you can manage and tag files like .doc or .html.  This will probably be a different product.  You won't have to take it if you don't want it.

4.  We'll add services, like music or movie purchasing.  This could go other directions.

And I plan to sod my side yard.

I didn't get any pictures out the window.  The view was incredible coming out of San Francisco, but I didn't think to take a picture.  Here's what I did get.

If anyone asks, I don't know the blonde.

Dang Jim!@!
That am one fine outhouse you got there. That must be a three-holer. My Granny had one of those but she was rich from selling the  "special elixer" she made in the back room of her big fine double-wide.

And a hearty "Schtum and Sod" to everyone at James River.

"Schtum" means to keep quiet (think it's spelt "shtum", though I'm not even sure if it's a real word - quick search of online dictionary couldn't find it...), and "sod all" is analogous to "SFA", "bugger all", "next to nothing" etc.

I had noticed that there wasn't much happening (not as many new builds etc.), but I care not, I still have a nicely working MC thank you very much!

Speaking of the next new version, will it be the one which includes a multi-user database, adding the possibility of client updates via Media Server? Please? Is it neccessary to sacrifice a virgin or goat to enable this?

Thanks
Your humble servant

I think with all the work you guys have done since June 03 (that's when I purchased) till now is just remarkable.... You guys deserve the chill period...

The lack of new builds just mean I can learn about what I already have....

And Jim, You feal fortunate about being 32K in the air.... I feel fortunate that my a** never leavs the ground!! (I hate flying)

"schtum" might be the phonetic pronunciation of the German word "stumm" - and that means - quiet, without voice.

Nice pictures!

Looking forward to this document handling features. It is so much easier to browse through tagged information than using traditional file oriented explorer like browsers!

ah well, i'm glad you picked up on that discreet broadside there...

i'm also glad you are having a deserved good time.
two things you could do:
a) help poor old steveG, he's got a very long 'to do' list, e.g. an iriver plugin, two way synching, etc... I think he would very much like you to start work of somehow rigging up dynamic playlists on the ipod, coz that's something he hinted at, but i can't see how he can be very optimistic about that ever happening. but rest assured, the whole ipod community would instantly migrate to Media Center if it could do THAT!
b) help your 'sort-of' namesake iRiver with their customer service as i explained in the rest of that post from whence you quoted... they could do with a few tips, as i feel their forums are now so full of howling beasts that they don't venture in there at all these days....

sod my side yard

I was supposed to do some gardening last weekend, and funnily enough 'Sod the garden' was what I said when I decided not to do it. Lucky I didnt say 'D-mn the garden', otherwise I wouldnt have been able to tell you about it here.

PS both D-mn and s-d are not generally considered offensive terms in the UK, honest. They are sort of equivalent in the cuss-stakes. No offence intended to anyone else. It just tickled my sense of humour.

Friends, it's hard to follow you with my poor english !
But i hope to improve it by reading and understanding what you wrote.

Lee, i am totally lost with the word "cuss-stakes". I didn't find it in my Eng-Ger Dic, please help me!
Btw, is it possible, that your English on the Island is a little bit flashy (oh god, i hope this is the right word...) compared to the US English? Or is it just the humour ? ;)

Sorry, Uwe, I didnt mean to confuse you.

What I meant was that the two words I mentioned are mild expletives, roughly equivalent in their strength. One of which I cant write here because the forum software wont allow it. But 'sod' can be written. It seems that Jim is going to dig his garden, or perhaps lay some turf(?), but to my ears it was if he was saying 'to heck with the garden'.

Cuss-stakes is not a real word. 'Cuss' is slang for curse or swear. 'Stakes' is used often to refer to a competition or comparison. So you might say that in the digital jukebox stakes, MC is way ahead of the rest.

The old joke is that US and UK are two countries divided by a common language.

Lee, thanks a lot for your explanation and your patience.
Please, you must not think, that you are confusing me, you just make me curious (in a positive way)!

Thanks again and greetings from the old continent
