slow transfer speed to handheld player
« on: September 14, 2004, 07:32:00 am »

I added a USB 2 pci card to my PC, and the transfer speeds didn't seem that fast to my handheld mp3 player.

I did some testing and found transfering music via Media Center was 3 times slower than if I copied files via a windows file manager.

I transfered 21 mp3 with a combined size of 104Mbytes.
-Media center took 2 min 37secs, a transfer rate of 5.57 Megabits/sec
-File manager took 56 secs,         a transer rate of 15.63 Megabits/sec

Why the huge difference, and is there anyway to improve Media center?
Three times slower is ridiculous!

Specs:
Creative MuVo Slim 256MB MP3 Player (usb 2 compatable)

Motherboard Name   Compaq PRESARIO 5420CA
Motherboard Chipset   Intel Solano i815E
System Memory   256 MB  (PC133 SDRAM)

Operating System   Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
OS Service Pack   Service Pack 1

Certified Data USB 2 PCI card

Murray,

What version of MC do you have installed?  If you can, try MC 11, speeds should be much faster.

I'm using the latest version of media center 10
10.0.161

I would use media center  11 but reading the posts its still not really bug free yet as it is still in the alpha stage. I'll just have to wait until they release the production version of MC11. You would think the transfer speed would be close to the speed of the native OS file system?

Other than this and a few other gliches the overall program is awesome, and I am very impressed with it.

I have been using 11 since it started. While there are a few little bugs, I have not had any problems using it.

Steve,

I'm getting very slow synch times with MC11 and my Ipod. Through a firewire connection I'm getting 2 MB/s where I was getting over 6 MB/s in MC10.

John,

What version of MC 11 do you have? Are speeds faster if you transfer files directly to iPod from Windows Explorer(keeping in mind that this would only be a test and the files would not be recognized by iPod and should be deleted right away to save space)?
