Is MC9 Working?
« on: September 07, 2003, 10:21:52 am »

Hi All,

I have been following the updates to the beta of MC9.1 and it looks like there are a lot of new things being added. Finally, I decided to download a recent build of 9.1 and saw many new designs.

BUT, I am seeing things that haven't worked in any version of MC9.xx. One is the album art. If I save an album art that comes up for Enrique Eglesias - in the file - the picture dissapears from the properties box and does not show in the playing now box or visualizations.
Then the dialogue box tells me I have "multiple images". That is that? At what point did I have the option of selection multiple images? Why is more than one stored in the file?

Selecting album art is not smooth at all. NOT even in the 9.0 version. Honestly, swallow your pride and take some tips from Musicmatch Jukebox and how they handle tags and album art.

Their album art selection and tag updates work flawlessly. AND when that program finds multiple art and tages it lets you select which one you want. Then when everything is applied.... IT WORKS.

I know JRiver and everyone on this board work hard to make MC9 a very best program. That is great. My point is simple that JRiver should make sure that the most fundamental parts of using MP3's, OGG, etc. work well before going into other things like video, hair styles, etc., etc.
As a person with a background in Strudtured & Modular programming I kow that each module should be tested and COMPLETED before developing a new module.
Even without structured programming this should be easy to do with well designed flow-charting. YES programs this big need charts or absolute failure will ensume.

Again, I am only saying this because even the "working" versin of MC9 has these an other bugs.

Truly, keep up the good work. I support JRiver in their efforts. That is why I am being so honest and direct.

Good luck and I hope that these issues and ID3 tag issues will merit your attention.

do you have more than one media file (mp3) selected?

if so it can not show all the pictures for all the files whereonly one picture is to go, so only select one file at a time and it should show up in that box.

as i said above to view pictures select one mpeg at a time.

it works fine here

That's not true.  I have written several e-mails to MMJB support complaining about strange happenings with tags.  There's all sorts of bugs in there - and they acknowledged the fact.  Problem is they gave no comittment to correcting it and just advised me to go back to a previous version (i.e. from 7.5 to 7.2).

MC is a much better tagging program in my opinion.

simple,
You could help yourself and make a few friends by telling us exactly what you're doing without adding all the extra comments.  It just makes it harder to read and understand.

Are you trying to view your cover art?

Try changing View/List style.

In the action window, try switching to File Properties/Image.

Re: Is MC9 Working?About tagging.

I am man enough to admit I was wrong about one thing... Album art does seem to be working. I am not sure what was wrong but it is working now.

About the tagging issue. Let me be exact about what I found.

1) I edit the tag info for: Artist, Song Name, Album, Genre and maybe year. ** The tags for these are all double-bye (unicode) Japanese except the date and Genre.

2) I think the information is updated in the tage information. I even select "update from library" in the tools.

3) I completely remove MC9 - due to system rebuild, os install, etc. - and re-install.

4) I search media on my drive and I see all my songs BUT none of the unicode information is readable!! All the names, etc are shown as "???"

5) I have to re-enter all that information.

This is why I don't understand why the information stored in the ID3 tag - not the library database file - is not secure and readable by WMP, MMJB, etc.

This should at least be readable by the exact same version of MC9, right?

I thought I should mention this because I never see any comments about unicode or Japanese characters.

Also, I am curious, does anyone at JRiver test the unicode by entering Japanese, Korean and Chinese characters?

This time, I am not complaining. Just pointing out some bugs.
I feel a little humbled by my mistake with Art File and Look ups.

P.S. MMJB does have a cool way to select the correct media.

I do have quite a huge collection of chinese songs and it work for me.

Entering all the tag information in unicode work for me.

But what I did was change the default langauge of WinXp to Chinese (Taiwan). Without this change, even Winamp don't work for me if I use unicode.

Just to make it clear.

The steps I used to get the default language are as followed. Only valid maybe for WinXp.

:)

Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings -> Advanced Tab.

The first drop down box you can choose the language you want to use for non-unicode program. Just choose Chinese or Japanese? I think.

We don't save to ID3v2 tags using Unicode, because most software doesn't understand the tags at that point.  Switching your locale may be enough to allow ANSI to work.

APE, OGG, MPC and JPEG all have full unicode support in their tagging.

escaflo, I do know about what you are talking about. Actually, it is a really nice feature of Windows XP. But, working with Unicode as the default can cause some strange effects with other programs. Also, Even with English as the default there are many programs that support double-byte entry: Word 2000/XP, Outlook Express, Excel 2K/XP, Publisher 2K/XP. But if tagging inside the MP3 Id3 header doesn't worh then I will probably convert everything to romanization.

Matt, I understant that other programs might not understand the unicode ID3 tag but I hope to use only MC9 which I hope will understand unicode id3 tags.

Also, I don't want to convert my songs to another format because my car cd player plays mp3's. But it does not have unicode.

For now I guess I have to live with uncertainty in the id3 world. But thank you for the advice and help.

If they implement that, please, inform user that tagging could be unreadable for other players. I want my music can be played in any software or device.

If it is implemented as "[] save ID3 as Unicode" then I am sure that the default when the program is installed will be un-checked.

Many people don't use unicode with MC9 because MC9 has not had a lot of distrobution in Asia.

As soon as it does make it to the billions in Asia then I am sure they would apreciate that feature.

I am amoung the few who use both and am not asian.

I wish people would start threads with a meaningful subject heading.  I look at this one almost everyday before I remember that I'm not at all interested in or have any knowledge of the subject.  Therefore, this is the only useful contribution I can make!
