Looking for general advice here because I don't know a ton about resolution/ frame rate. If I record TV from my local Fox station, it plays back what I was describe as perfectly. Those files are 1280x720 @ 59.94 fps. However, CBS and NBC look choppy. They show in MC as 1920x1080 @ 29.97 fps. My tuner is a Silicondust HDHomeRun Tuner.

I'm playing the files back over a network (hard wired, shouldn't be a bottleneck).

I'm running at a resolution of 1920x1080 on the video card.

What type of things should I be looking at in my HTPC setup to investigate this? Thanks!

Your 1280x720 @ 59.94 fps and progressive and the 1920x1080 @ 29.97 fps are interlaced. The interlaced ones need to be "de-interlaced" to show on modern TV/Screens etc. In Tools--> Options--> Video try different combinations of Video Mode (HQ vs Std) and check/unchecked Hardware acceleration and see if any of these help. I have a HDHomeRun (but a PAL version) and all content looks good to me.

What are your specs for the playback machine? What CPU/GPU and how much RAM?

Also, is it a Gigabit Ethernet network, or 100 Mb? 100 Mb should be plenty, but depending on how you are connected, it can be a factor. If you are using ROHQ (high quality video engine), try changing to RO standard...for sure do that unless you have a powerful GPU (video card).

My guess is you are dropping frames, since you say it is jerky, and this is unlikely a network bandwidth issue. But still worth looking into.

Thanks for the replies. Specs of the machine:

8GB RAM
Dual Core i5 3.1 GHz
Win 10 x64
AMD Radeon HD 7000 video card
JRMark (version 21.0.23): 3512
1 gbps LAN

When I change the video to RO Stnd, I get no video, only sound and a black screen. When I try to change settings in MadVR, my video driver blows up and I have to reboot. A MadVR error is present on the screen when that happens, but it's pretty brief and I can't make it all out. I see something like MadVR Error, and GPU something. I assume it's responding to the video drive crapping out. I've updated the video driver consistently, just tried rolling back a version, same issue.

Is it possible to "reset" MadVR?

Not sure about the GPU...do you mean HD7000 series, or is it an actual HD7000? I couldn't see a HD7000 from AMD.

The other specs are obviously fine.

As far as ROHQ resetting, I know it is possible to delete the directory and have it reset, but I haven't ever done it, so you would have to search. I am also unsure if that actually resets settings or not.

The fact that you are not getting RO Std to work though is a concern.

HD 7000 Series. Actually not sure which sub-model... Everything I"m looking at in Windows just tells me the HD 7000 Series name, including the AMD Control Center app.

EDIT: It must be the 7700 because it's reporting 1GB of GPU memory.

if you enable ROHQ, and start a 1080 movie, press Ctrl-J on your keyboard...this should bring up some diagnostics...are you dropping frames? It's common to drop a few when MadVR first starts, so check to see if it rises.

I am way more familiar with Nvidia GPU's because of my job, so to be honest, I am not sure how good the HD7750/7770's are in the AMD world.

After maybe 10-15 seconds it was up to 3k dropped frames. Then the video driver blew up again, so MC won't play anything until I reboot. I would call it a "decent mid-range" card. I've had issues with it post my Win10 upgrade though, which is why I've updated the drivers fairly religiously. I can usually get away with not having the driver blow up like this though.

I think I got the video card in 2012 - so maybe time for a new one anyway.

Wow...with that then, I would try to get either RO std working, or even try using the Windows merit system as a quick fix until you can get it working the way you want. I am using a Nvidia GTX960 on one client with Mad VR, and it handles the default settings fine, but I only use that on my 4k TV...I use RO std on my downstairs PC running 1080p.

Is the wow because that's a lot of frames, or an old video card?

Oddly enough, once the video driver blows up, I can get RO Std to work. Of course, the video driver is also controlling the audio over HDMI, so I have no audio. With the driver I have audio and no video, without, video and no audio. Kind of a fun game...

Thanks for the information.

Time to do research on video cards... And need to pull out the HTPC because I *think* I need a low profile card to fit in the machine, which likely limits my options.

In doing Ctrl+J that just tells MC to check for updates. I found the setting in MadVR that this reads from and changed it to ctrl+alt+shift+j and that didn't work either. Just googled resetting MadVR settings, so I'm trying to work my way through that now.

Not sure how I got those on if ctrl+j is usually bound to tell MC to check for updates, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything but checking for updates no matter how many times I was hitting it in a row.

I searched for ctrl + j, but I guess searching on "MadVR ctrl" would have been better. Resetting the MadVR settings seemed to work, and in fact, it seems to have helped with a bit of the choppy display. I'll have to dig in a little more to make sure, but perhaps I had just screwed that up to no-end.

There's a batch file in the MadVR plugins folder for JRiver (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 21\Plugins\madVR\restore default settings.bat).

Not likely to be your problem, but a worthwhile check is to use the HD Homerun View program to watch the problem channels. If they are OK, your tuner and network are fine, and the problem is likely to be in something you can adjust in JRiver.

My two bits of anecdotal data: 1) my built-in intel graphics are insufficient to run smoothly in HQ mode, and 2) to my surprise, my Netgear gigabit switch was dropping enough packets to make video unwatchable in SD mode for a couple of days, until I figured it out and rebooted the switch.

I'm using standard ROHQ settings on my Workstation, and previously on my HTPC. All I have ever had to do to get Ctrl+J to work was left click on the playing video to get it in focus if it wasn't, and then Ctrl+J. Just checked. Still working fine.

If Ctrl+J causes MC to check for updates, MC is still I focus.
