JRiver doesn't connect to Burmester 113 DAC (USB)
« on: January 04, 2016, 10:19:45 pm »

I am new to the world of computer audio.
Trying to connect my Burmester 113 USB DAC via ASIO4ALL to JRiver. The Driver detects my built in RealTek HD Audio but does not
detect my Burmester DAC. I really don't see any specific drivers for the Burmester. It is a standard Class 2.0 Audio USB DAC.
Am I missing something?
Thanks very much,
Sudesh

Welcome to the forum.  ASIO4All is a wrapper around Kernel Streaming, so there is no advantage to using it when compared to Kernel Streaming.  If your device has an ASIO driver, install it and use ASIO.  Otherwise, use WASAPI.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the welcome note. I don't see any drivers posted for the Burmester 113 DAC, so I was hoping for the ASIO driver to recognize a generic class 2 Audio Device.
When I used a Melco N1A server as a streamer, it seemed to recognize the Burmester. However, I was thinking of a pure laptop solution, but I am getting nowhere :-(

For MC to see your DAC, windows needs to see it first.  Once Windows can play sounds to your DAC, then MC should be able to recognize it.  I looked at the manufacturer's web site and did a web search and I didn't find any drivers for that DAC.  I would contact the manufacturer or your seller about drivers for Windows.  Did you look in the box for a driver disk?

I agree with Brian. If I'm not mistaken, Class 1 Audio should work with Windows own generic drivers. But you definitely need drivers from Burmester for Class 2 Audio. I'm surprised they don't provide any, given the upscaled prices.

Thanks guys!
I'll have to check with Burmester about providing me with the class 2 drivers for Windows.
In the meanwhile, would appreciate if any Burmester owners use any of their Burmester DAC/Preamps with
USB.
No CDs in the original boxes :-(

Just another thought... because of various reasons I'm now using a Raspberry with Volumio and plugged my AntiMode DualCore 2.0 into it and stream via uPNP. To my own surprise it works astonishing good. Every USB DAC I own (the mentioned AntiMode, TEAC UD-501, Nubert NuPro A-200) worked out of the box with Raspberry/Volumio with full features.

So the Raspberry works as a renderer and I control everything with JRemote.

Linux supports USB audio class 2 out of the box with modern kernels, just like OSX.  Windows is the only major OS that doesn't support USB audio class 2 by default.

Doesn't Windows 10 supposed to have Class 2 Audio drivers?
If not, Can I just install a generic class 2 audio driver ?
Will the sound quality suffer, if done so?

Thanks!!

No

Not that I'm aware of.  You need a driver from your manufacturer on Windows to my knowledge.

The DAC may still work in USB Audio Class 1 mode in windows, but will not be able to output all the sample rates.

Thanks for all the input, guys!!
I am leaning towards buying a i7/Mac OS 256GB SSD and use that as the source. See if it supports class 2.0.
I know the Melco server did recognize it, so Linux does have the drivers.
How would compare the transparency & sound quality compared to say, an Aurender ?

Heh, I wish. There's an open Insider topic asking for native USB Audio Class 2.0 support here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_devices/windows-support-for-usb-audio-20/0d633b9f-3193-4c63-8654-fb10b3614a04

Basically you need a driver for USB Audio Class 2.0 on Windows if you want above 96kHz support. Otherwise a DAC *should* work with 96kHz and below without any drivers on Windows... in your case, however, it seems you need a driver regardless.

Thanks for all the input, guys!!

Fortunately Mac and Linux have native USB Audio Class 2.0 support without the need of any drivers. Windows is really the only major OS out there without native USB Audio Class 2.0 support.

I've just read in a German forum, that you can switch USB Classes on the Burmester by pressing the USB (Input?) button. I'm pretty confident, that at least Class 1 should work with windows without any third party drivers. Could be worth a try, just to get it working.

There is a low/high button that I pressed (switch from class 1 & 2). Still No avail.
In any case, I plan to use a MacBook Pro this weekend to connect and see if it works.
Keep you guys posted.
Fantastic feedback, guys!!

Tried last night in class 1 audio.
It works with frequent drop outs. You hear a clicking sound in the DAC (locking on ?) many times during the lock in/out times. Seems random.
The laptop is an i7 4th Gen, 16 G, 480G SSD and no other application running (user). Length of USB cable < 2 meters. Tried a different cable, same story.
Would it be the same case with Class 2 in a Mac/Linux too?

Hi

Just throwing this out there ... have you tried the JRiver ASIO driver? In the win version, you have to turn it on under Options=>General=>Features .. might have to reboot afterwards, not sure. I know its better to use a native ASIO driver form the manufacturer but in this case if you haven't already loaded their driver,  I'd give it a try ... not sure but I think to get the asynchro benefits you need to be on USB2 right? I always stick to SPDIF connections to avoid this stuff though, not sure if you have the option to do that.

mhh... good point, according to the schemetics there should not be much difference in quality

don't know about the schematics, but there is no mention that the DAC runs in asynchronous mode. Which is weird if it actually does. If it doesn't and runs standard USB I certainly would use a digital output unless the motherboard doesn't have one. Never heard of this DAC tho, so don't want to judge. As its not cheap, I guess it has to have a good USB input (it even has a blue tooth input ... pretty unusual?!)

According to the (German) reviews, at least Class 2 uses asynchronous mode. Normally Burmester is something you build an altar for, to put your device on it  ;D. But I don't now for sure...

yes it has a price tag that would indicate at least beatification  ;D! As I said I'd try the JRiver ASIO driver if that's the case in the meantime waiting for the driver from the company
