Windows 10 app problems when running JRiver
« on: January 15, 2016, 01:25:58 pm »

Hi there,

I absolutely love JRiver, so this is no indictment of it, but really could use help tracking down my problem.

I am having an issue with apps and performance on Windows which only occurs when JRiver Media Center is running (both previously on 8.1 and now Win 10)    When JRiver is running, my Windows apps will open and then immediately close.  After opening them a second time, they usually work.  Unfortunately the computer also  runs slower when this happens.  This only affects built in apps from the store(such as Sports, the Store, Weather, etc) not desktop apps or programs (like Office).  After a reboot, everything works fine, as long as MC isn't started.  The problem takes  a little while to begin--JRiver can be running for a short while and apps will open, but once it has been running for any amount of time the problem happens with a great deal of consistency.  Apps that have been open will also just randomly close once J River has been running for while.

I have JRiver running on 3 computers--one as my media server--and 2 others as playback devices on the home network.  The problem happens on all three computers-wired and wireless.    To test this out, I left 2 of the computers with JRiver running for days without shutting down, and none of my apps ever have any problems.  Once I run JRiver to watch a movie or to select music to play, the problem begins.

I'm not sure what to begin looking for....I assume that if this were a pervasive problem, others would have reported it.  It seems it must be some kind of permissions problem or conflict on my machines, yet I don't know how to begin to solve my issue.

I can't live without JRiver and I don't want to continue to have to reboot constantly.  Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated.

It might be related to a driver.

Are you using any plug-ins?

Is MC looking for your data on a remote drive?

BTW, we prefer JRiver to J River.  We changed a few years ago because it works better with searches.  I changed your post above.

Oops, sorry about that.  JRiver :-[

Are you using any plug-ins?

I don't use any plug ins.  I use JRiver's convolution engine to drive a pair of active speakers (using Audiolense to generate the XO filter)  The other 2 computers don't do any more than playback of video or control of audio, so they aren't even using the Audiolense filter.

Is MC looking for your data on a remote drive?
Yes.  All of my music and video are on a 3TB drive that is attached to the main computer via USB 3.0

It might be related to a driver.
I figured it must be something like this, but I'm having a tough time tracking anything down.  I've updated all of my drivers and use Windows update to make sure Windows 10 and its components are up to date.  I've even updated the LYNX 2B software and firmware since that drives my amps from the computer.  The other 2 computers are up to date as well.

Thanks so much for the help

This is actually an all too common problem on Windows 10 and has impacted a lot of people. I have not seen it connected at all to MC.

I've heard that using the free tool from Tweaking.com can resolve this. I haven't tried it yet, but in my searches I have repeatedly seen nothing but excellent reviews by people who have used it. Of course, you should make backups prior to it's use and it in fact guides you through the process (and strongly encourages the backups). It runs scripts that fix permission issues etc. and also runs some of the Microsoft supplied integrity checking utilities.

My suspicion is that these problems occur in upgrades from earlier versions of Windows, as opposed to clean installs.

I have no affiliation with Tweaking.com, but thought I would put that suggestion to you since it has seemed to solve your exact problem for a lot of people.

Also, as mentioned, make sure you have all the latest drivers. Sometimes you can get them from your system vendor, other times you might want to check the vendor of the hardware item in your PC (e.g, bluetooth chip, wireless chips). Windows 10 usually finds them, but I have resolved problems by searching them out manually.

Hope this helps.

Great, thanks for the suggestion.  I'll definitely look into it as it is one of the few solutions I haven't tried yet!

All of my upgrades on all of the computers in question have been upgrades, not clean installs, so that is certainly a possibility.

I have tried many things such as new drivers right from the vendors websites, firmware updates, windows troubleshooting, scripts run to fix permission issues with Windows apps, etc. and the only thing that has made the problem stop is to not run JRiver, hence my assumption of some incompatibility/issue.

It must be something unique to my setup  as it seems like it would be much more widespread if that were the only issue going on here.  My 3 computers are all very different in their hardware configurations--desktop, laptop and convertible/tablet.   I can go days or weeks with no problems on any of them if I don't run JRiver, but as soon as I start JRiver the problem appears soon after, 100% of the time.

Thanks again for the suggestion.  I really appreciate the help and advice and I'll just keep trying.    If I get anywhere with tweaking.com, I'll let people know just in case it can help even 1 other person.

Is this the same issue that stops the Windows 10 start menu appearing after a period of time? Works fine after a reboot, but some time later it stops working once again.

I only see this on one of my Win 10 + JRiver PCs. It's the latest i5 NUC. The older N2820 (I think) NUCs don't exhibit this problem nor does my i3 Dell laptop.

I have been meaning to post this as well...it would be nice to find a way around this problem.  I use Cortana and the Start menu a lot, and it is annoying when it stops showing up.

No. This user is having an issue where Windows Apps from the Windows App Store ("new" style apps like the News, Weather, Maps, etc) stop launching.

The Start Menu freezing is a different (and common) Windows 10 issue, discussed over here:

It has nothing to do with MC.

As far as the OPs issue, I had one Windows 10 install (a Windows 7 VM that had been upgraded in place) that did the same kind of thing (though it didn't have anything to do with MC). I couldn't get Edge to launch (it would open and then immediately close) and then the problem would quickly spread to other apps.

I fought it for a while and tried a bunch of tutorials online that had solutions. None of them ended up working permanently (and some made the issue worse). I eventually surrendered and reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch and the problem went away.

The apps not opening issue is a known Windows 10 issue - one of many. Do a Google search and you'll find multiple topics regarding this issue.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't knowingly use any of the Windows 10 apps and uninstalled as many of them as I could using the PowerShell commands in an old posting from the forum so I wasn't sure if it was the same issue or not.

Cheers

Yeah. I followed that rabbit hole for many many days on that one obnoxious VM. Like I said though:

* It had nothing to do with MC (it happened even with MC uninstalled - at one point I uninstalled basically everything).
* None of the various PowerShell Get-AppXPackage fixes worked. Some made it worse. Others seemed to work for a day or two but then returned.

I ended up building a new, fresh VM and I've been running it for months now, and it has been fine. I strongly suspect something in the upgrade process went sideways.
