When I hit the rip button, I mean to rip. Why must I hit it twice?

which buttons are you referring to exactly?

If it's the one I think you are referring to then the 1st click is really more of a "open the ripping screen so you can determine what it is you're ripping", this lets you fill in metadata about what you're about to rip so that that gets populated as it loads. The 2nd click then actually triggers the ripping of that disc. Same text in used in both cases for the button but one launches the dialog and the other triggers the action.

What you said explains it, but it's a improper user interface situation, as the tracks are already apparent onscreen (or have already been edited).
