I have some great old concert archives, but they are in *.rm & *.ra format at 32kbs.
I would like to find out what that would be if they had been mp3 files at the same quality.  
(I think I recall that with *.wma files it is something like 96kbs is equivalent to an mp3 fila at 128kbs.)

Anyone know how it works with these real files?

I only ask because I am planning to 'capture' them as they play using Total Recorder as *.wav files and want to have some basis to decide what to do with them from there. Knowing the quality of the 'raw material' will help me in this decision. The bottom line will be what my ears tell me, but I'd like to have some other type of evaluative data to reinforce my decision as well.

If not wrong , they said that they format was smaller than MP3 ,but not that much--Again ,if i remember well.

You have to mess around alone ,madame, trying to find the sound you like the best ,or dislike the less.

To me ,look like wma is the 'less terrible'.

Do not know if you use any DSP , but ,in this case you need a mix of format/DSP.
When you found what you like ,stick to both format AND DSP.

DBpower has a Real file decoder.
Can be more convenient than TotalRecorder , cause your soundcard if free.

I had an idea since long: make cassettes from the files and after rip them in analogue.
Sounds to me as a way to get better sound-- but can be a very stupid idea....

Anyway my Tape desk is dead and i cannot find anymore one with VU meter , cannot stand this f.. led lights , so no tape desk right now.

Well, dbPowerAMP converter was the only one I hadn't tried yet, so I gave it a try and guess what?
nope it wouldn't convert them either, so I will need to use Total recorder after all.

I never used the dbPowerAmp , but look like it convert only 'new' Real format riped music.

For a time ,i had problems withthe TotalRecorder driver.
I started to use MC Recorder , who is just VERY GOOD...... when you have set the volume.. can be a pain in the moon to set it......

If you ,i would gave a try to MP3 128 or MPC 'radio'.
I do think that wma 9 format need to be try-at quality based VRB Q50 or Q75.

If the sound of your files allready a little 'metalic and dry', do not use MP3

I used to use EO Video to convert my real files. You do run into problems occasionally with conversion but it might be worth a shot as an alternative to "real time" encoding with TR.
