ROHQ not using GPU?
« on: February 23, 2016, 02:30:17 am »

Just moved MC over to a new laptop with better specs, etc.

It has an nvidia GTX 970m discrete GPU.

I set MC to use ROHQ and all seems well, but I noticed that it is not using the nvidia gpu at all.

I ran some tests to verify that the gpu is working properly and it is.

I thought that ROHQ would make use of the gpu.

Is this odd? Should I set some other option to make use of the gpu?
The Intel chip is an HD Graphics 530 (in case that is a factor).

Thanks!

You likely need to add madVR to the programs that request the discrete GPU when using Optimus: https://youtu.be/Zh4HCadTY_A

Thank you, Bryan, I'll try that tonight.

If I understand correctly, I need to add madvr, not just MC, (or only madvr and not MC) in configuring the Optimus technology. Is that correct?

Where does MC store madvr? Is it in a separate directory, or embedded in an MC subdir? (not at home, so can't check now).

Best,

Just adding madVR should be sufficient and better for your battery.

madVR is found in %APPDATA%\Roaming\J River\Media Center 21\plugins\madvr

Thanks again!

I'll report back how it works.

Much appreciated.

Re: ROHQ not using GPU? [EDIT]

I only see 3 executables in the madvr folder.
They are:
installfilter.exe
madHcCtrl.exe (mad* home cinema control)
madLevelsTweaker.exe (madvr NVidia & Intel RGB Output Levels Tweaker)
madTPG.exe (madvr Test Pattern Generator)

I figured madHcCtrl.exe was the one to set to use the nvidia gpu and did that. However, when I play a video in MC, it still isn't using the nvidia GPU.

[EDIT]: I did just add JRiver MC to run with nvidia and it is doing that. It would be interesting to see how to just see madvr to use it.

Any ideas?
All help appreciated.

You can't set just madVR, since its not a program, its a plugin for MC. Not sure why the others would recommend that.

Ahhh that stemmed from my display switching rules that was triggered by madHcCtrl.exe.

That's probably all you can do.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll stick with assigning MC to the nvidia gpu.

I see that there are quite a lot of options in setting in the nvidia control panel to determine what the gpu does.

If anyone has either an Optimus profile for MC (and the GTX 970m or similar) -or- a tutorial on choosing and setting options, I would greatly appreciate that.
