Mensa was too "off-topic"...  let's hope JimH likes these tomatos!

Scott-

P.S.  Or is it "tomatoes"?  If I were in Mensa, I'd bet I'd know!

Yum!! My mouth is watering!!

My plants have grown huge and are full of beautiful green tomatoes and tomatos but we're probably 3 weeks away from our first BLT (that's a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich) of the season.  There's  nothing quite as wonderful tasing as a freshly picked, beautifully ripe tomato.

Get some bacon

I am glad to see me and JimH is not the only ones to grow our own tomatoes.

The ones in the store just suck.

They look really nice, what was the variety?

Beefsteak.
They're really not as great as they appear because the stem has to be so big to hold the weight, you would be lucky to get three slices from it. But they are really BIG slices. Bigger than a piece of bread.
And my secret is "LUCK". Good weather, a lot of rain, not many insects and I stumbled on a good fertile section of my lawn. I use no fertilizers or insecticides. In the past, that has translated into no edible tomatoes and some very well-fed bugs and rabbits. I still have plenty of rabbits but there's enough for everyone this year.
I also have a Bradley plant that is producing the really edible tomatoes.
Oh, yeah ... there's only three plants - a Bradley, a beefsteak and a German variety that makes some really weird looking tomatoes.

well i got over 1,000 tomatoes easy this year (i have alot of plants) but i also think they are getting too much sun per my tests (on the north side of my house) and they burn up early.

the plants on the north side are still growning, the ones in the back yard were pulled up 2-3 weeks ago because they were dieing and all the rain beat them to death.

I take a very Zen approach to gardening ... if it grows, it grows - if it doesn't, it doesn't. I don't fertilize, weed, water or try to kill the bugs or keep out the critters. Needless to say, I don't usually get much. But, at worst, it's a spot I don't have to mow.

I am More X-Zen

I water, spray, fertilize and cry when it does not grow

What's your address? I have more tomatoes than I can possibly eat. PLEASE take some. (Just kidding but only because they wouldn't get there in good shape)

And JimH,
Thanks but "work" is a little too strong a word.

Tomato sandwich, anyone?

German variety that makes some really weird looking tomatoes.

There's a pepper plant called a German Johnson. No lie.

Only German tomato I can think of offhand was a green variety.

You should order a seed book from: Totally Tomatoes. Unreal selection of species.

Some good ones:

Costolutto Generese - Swiss origins. Somewhat squat and ridged like pumpkin. Excellent slicer.

Brandywine - The ultimate heirloom - Amish origins. This type should be declared the National Tomato of the U.S.A.

Elberta Girl - Do not know the origin of this one. It is about the size of a peach with stripes of orange that contrast with red skin. Wonderful.

Italian Gold Hybrid - A golden plum type that is mostly seedless and great for pastes' And not so tough as to be denied a place in a salad.

Yours look great. Enjoy!

BST's are better (bacon, spinach, tomatoes). Once you use fresh spinach leaves where lettuce is the norm...you won't go back. Straight tomato & Miracle Whip sandwiches are groovy. The bread can make all the difference...I use wheat berry here (has whole kernels of wheat in it...awesome).

1.      a. A widely cultivated South American plant (Lycopersicon esculentum) having edible, fleshy, usually red fruit. b. The fruit of this plant.
2.      Slang. A woman regarded as attractive.

Why is an attractive woman called a tomato??

I'll have to plant those next year in honor of my German husband, John :)

Now I'm really excited! That's what I planted this year.  The birds sure think they're terrific..!
