Can't play some mpg or avi files
« on: July 26, 2003, 08:03:01 am »

When I try to play some mpg or avi files I get sound, but no picture.  MC9 gives me the message:

"Media Center can not display visualizations for this file type.  Visulizations are only available for internally supported file types. (mp3, ogg, wav, ape, etc.)"

Please help.

Is it possible you don't have the video codecs installed for those files?

Will they play in other players? (like Windows Media Player)

Thank!

Depends on the codecs used by the files.   You'll have to dig around where you got them from to find the codec packs...

Sometimes files with the .avi extension are actually in DivX format instead of the normal Windows video format. You can download the DivX codec pack from http://www.divx.com

If you right click one of the files in Windows Explorer, you might be able to see what format was used to encode the video.

Codec is from enCOde/DECode.  MP3 is a famous example of one.

Please try google for more information.  There is a lot out there.  Hydrogenaudio.com is also a good source.
