Won't play DVD or BD
« on: September 16, 2016, 09:19:20 pm »

MC22 is behaving oddly.  It doesn't read Blu Ray discs in the drive at all indicating there is no media in the drive and I obtain an error message when trying to play DVD's.  Message when trying to play DVD:  "Error:  Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed.  Can't playback this DVD-Video Disc".

Any suggestions?

Did you ever have it working prior to MC 22?

If you're new, here are two wiki topics you should be familiar with:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Blu-ray

and

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DVD

Note the need for a decrypter in both cases.

If you have AnyDVD HD or equivalent already installed, but cannot play non DVD/BD video files either, make sure you have Video checked as a feature in Options> General> Features.

More than likely you'll need a decrypter like AnyDVD HD.

Which is why a few of us here will rip a disc first with a separate application. As mentioned above, unfortunately MC doesn't have decrypting functionality out of the box.

Fortunately, it doesn't need to because there are viable work arounds, check here for recent relevant discussion:

Thanks for the replies.  I was able to play Blu-Ray's before MC22.

One suggestion I received from the MSI forum (MSI is manufacturer of laptop) was that the firmware for the drive has been updated and this may be the problem.

After reading the suggestions made, it very well may be that the discs need to be decrypted.  Obviously regardless of outcome, I need a copy of a decrypter.

I'll try the other suggestions and return to this thread to let everyone know the solution.  I'm starting off with updating the firmware for the Blu-Ray drive.

Thanks again,

Generally keeping your hardware up to date is always a good plan. It's also a standard check question that is often asked.

I'd expect recently manufactured discs have some sort of encryption, even if it's only a case of being region specific.

I find the ripping software that I've licensed to be very handy because it allows me to source discs from other regions without impediment. Also, ripping the disc allows me to get straight to the video instead of being bored by advertising and other intro rubbish. Some out there prefer to rip a disc to an .iso file so that they're got an electronic facsimile of the disc. Not the way I roll for reasons described previously. Each to their own. At least you've got options.

Problem solved.  But, I'm not pleased with the extent to which end-users need to go in order to use retail products purchased.

First, the firmware needed to be updated.  No big deal.  Then, I needed to purchase a license for AnyDVD HD for almost $100.  I could have downloaded and used for trial period.  But, then I'd need to deal with the same problem in a few weeks when the trial period ended.

Imagine what would happen if all media retailers were required to indicate on their products "Notice: This product is protected and will not be able to be played unless you pay additional fees".

No wonder why sites like Pirate Bay and others have come and gone.

Thanks everyone for your help,

If you'd researched the link that I posted, you could have opted for an alternative that would not have cost you extra in $ terms by downloading an ongoing trial key every month or so. All you would have been up for is the effort to rip discs, name the files and do a bit of library management. In fact, the Wiki reflects this advice to a fair extent:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Ripping

I would also point out that the capabilities of MC aren't hidden:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DVD#Requirements
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Blu-ray#Requirements
For Blu-ray, here's the detail from the link:

Requirements

MC supports unencrypted Blu-Ray playback. To playback encrypted Blu-ray discs, which includes most commercially released discs, a 3rd-party Blu-Ray decrypter is required. AnyDVD HD is a good option.

The software does come with a reasonable trial period, so everyone has the chance of scoping out its limits. The JRiver business model isn't perfect but it's been working for a lot of people out there for some time. Hopefully, this one ends up being just a bump in the road for you.

@Astromo
Your points were taken into account when I opined.   To be clear, I had the option of downloading freeware or time limited software.  But, I preferred to have a durable solution to the problem.  That was my choice.  Regarding JRiver, you are correct regarding it's limitations.  They are clearly stated.  My criticism refers to the onus placed on consumers by those who sell media at the retail level.  The Digital Rights Management laws that were encouraged by copyright holders place an unrealistic burden on the end user.   This is an old and worn out issue to be sure.  But, it's darn annoying nonetheless.

I see where both you and Astromo are coming from here. When you "opined", I too thought you were being highly critical of MC - unfairly so. But as I read on, I kind of figured out what you meant and where the real criticism was being directed. Glad you figured out a workaround.

I get copyright protection. Fair enough for the owner of the IP to protect themselves so that they get a fair share for their creative work (assuming they're not a fat cat in the middle). But it does make me smile how these attempts at placing barriers in people's way, only seems to encourage a response that finds a way around the obstacle.

Because of this, there's some sense in not putting the barriers up in the first place, rather find a way of extracting value some other way, e.g. product placement, so we end up paying somehow.

What I really don't get is the whole region protection with DVD and BD, given today's globalised world. I've imported discs from other countries because I simply had no choice. Thankfully, I've had the benefit of capable software to deal with that impediment.

To that extent, I think the suffering is shared.
