Linking Failed when trying to link House Band to JRiver MC
« on: September 20, 2016, 10:33:47 am »

Gang,

I'm a new user.  I currently use ITunes with a large hard drive of music files (mp3).  I just recently bought an Amazon Echo Dot and want to be able to voice control song selection.  I hear JRiver Media Center and an Alexa skill called House Band can make this happen.

I currently have a trial version of MC22 for Windows.  I can't link House Band to my network.  I keep getting this message:
Linking Failed.  Cannot reach JRiver Media Center.  Your library Server is not accessible from outside your home network.  You might need to enable port forwarding on your router.

I believe I have enable port forwarding on my router (TCP port52199) and I have my firewall selected for Public and Private for Media Center 22 and Media Center Extenders.  I recently received an email from JRiver (Jim Hillegass) stating that I don't need port forwarding on a LAN and to check the forums.

What am I missing?  Thanks, Mark

A few things to try.

Alexa requires media network to be setup and to have authentication turned off for initial setup.  Make sure you can connect via the web or Gizmo from a phone or tablet.

Then retry Alexa.

You have to setup JRiver to respond to control from outside your network....

After that it works.

This is because Alexa (House band) is trying to control JRiver from outside your local network.

I have the same issue
Cannot get echo dot and houseband to work.

I have gizmo working fine on my android but I get the same "error message" about media center working on LAN but not accesible from outside my network.

I checked firewall, and thats Ok

I tried port forwarding through my router but guessing its not set up properly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

House Band Alexa Linking

I struggled to find an answer anywhere for this but have eventually tracked down the problem so posting for others' reference.

When you come to linking your alexa account you do need to set up port forwarding on the router so the pc you have the jriver server running on is accessible from outside your home network.

That's not enough though if you have a firewall running as part of your pc internet security.  You have to allow traffic through the firewall on the pc too or the port forwarding you set up on the router fails.  Might be handy for someone from House Band to mention this in their instructions.

Sorry for the difficulties in set up. The house band instructions do mention port forwarding, etc., right at the start:
"You must have JRiver set up as a media server, and have it be accessible from outside your home network (Note: this might require you to enable port forwarding.)"
