DSD 256 with JRiver MC 22
« on: October 05, 2016, 05:14:33 am »

Hello everyone,

How can I rip SACD files at the DSD 256 format ?

When I click on options/Encoder setting/DSD/Encoder settings in only goes up to DSD 128.

I am using an Auralic Vega DAC with a SW version of 2.0

Thank you for your help

You cannot because they are formatted as DSD64. ;-)

You can rip them as DSD64 and play them as DSD256, if you wish.  This will also keep your storage needs to 1/4 of that required for DSD256.

MC can NOT rip SACDs.  To do that, you either need a modified Playstation 3, or one of a couple of newer multi-format players that have modified firmware available for them.  Ripping SACDs is nothing like ripping a CD.  It's a different process that requires special hardware.

MC cannot rip a SACD because the optical drives in PCs do not support that function. As Brian says, you can rip a SACD with an early version PS3 or from some Oppo and Pioneer Blu-Ray players. The output is 1x DSD (DSD64), since that is what is on the SACD.

The Encoding - CD - Ripping - DSD option is a setting that is applied when ripping  a standard Redbook CD. The output file from the rip is in DSD format.  It is basically a rip and file convert in one step. Since MC supports 4x DSD, it makes sense that that 4X DSD should be an available option under Encoder - CD Ripping.
