New User - Looking for help with tagging
« on: December 07, 2016, 12:11:28 pm »

Hi, all.  I am a new JRiver user - I am using JRiver on a laptop, connected to my NAS, and streaming to an Oppo 105.  I tend to use the JRemote app on my ipad to control JRiver.  Here is my issue:  I have been trying to edit the tags for some of my music (especially compilations) to list "Album Artist" as "Various Artists" so they can be easily found when scrolling for music.  I also would like to put all my holiday music under the genre label "Holiday", for obvious reasons.

I went through all of my files yesterday - using JRiver, and tried to edit the appropriate tags.  However, when I closed out of JRiver and then restarted the program, all the changes were gone.  So, another test - I made some edits and left the program open over night.  Woke up and, again, all changes were gone.

I ripped all my music using DbPowerAmp CD Ripper.  All ripped to FLAC.  Network is mostly wireless.

Does any one see what I am doing wrong here?  Thanks.

P.s. This forum has to be one of the most helpful ones I have ever seen.  Nice to see everyone helping each other.

hello and welcome to Interact

well a couple of things come to mind.

make sure the files are not read only in windows

you can't change tags on a client and have them stick (I think some of the Guru's do but that's above my knowledge)

so using a app to change tags I'm pretty sure won't stick

Thanks for the response.  I will check to make sure that they are not read only.  Do you think a program like Mp3tag would work?

I've used JRiver MC for more than 10 years.  I have used Mp3Tag and dBpoweramp in the past but I find that using MC for ripping and tag editing works better for me.  I have no trouble making tag changes and having them stick.

Your problem is specific to what you are doing so more detail about what you are doing is probably required to make progress.  If you are willing to supply more information  as people ask you questions, your changes of success are very good.

Some questions:

1. On what computer were you making the tag changes?

2. Does the MC library database reside on that computer or does it reside on a different computer running MC as a library server?

3. What fields (tags) were you changing?

4. What music file types are you editing tag values for?

5. Where are the music files stored when you edit them?  (On what computer?) Where are the library (database) files stored?

6. Can you post a screenshot of the screen as you editing a tag value and then a screenshot showing the unchanged tag values after you exit MC and start it again?

Thanks for the responses!  Listener, with respect to your questions:

Some questions:

1. On what computer were you making the tag changes?
I am making tag changes on the computer running MC (my laptop)

2. Does the MC library database reside on that computer or does it reside on a different computer running MC as a library server?
The library database is on my NAS.  I hope this is what you mean.  No other computers or drives are part of the chain.

3. What fields (tags) were you changing?
Album Artist for the most part.  Sometimes Genre.

4. What music file types are you editing tag values for?
FLAC

5. Where are the music files stored when you edit them?  (On what computer?) Where are the library (database) files stored?
All files are stored on the NAS (WD MyCloud).  NAS is connected to the wireless router (Fios) and the rest of the system is over wifi.

6. Can you post a screenshot of the screen as you editing a tag value and then a screenshot showing the unchanged tag values after you exit MC and start it again?  I will try to do this (never did it before, but I bet I can figure it out).

Looking forward to any advice you can provide.

another thing to try is go into

tools>options>general

and make sure the box is checked "update tags when file info changes"

honestly i find MC is the best tagging software out there, but it does have some quirks so hopefully we can help figure this one out quick for you

Thanks for the useful answers to my questions.  Some comments:

1. Someone suggested that you might be making changes on a computer where MC is running as a client on one computer accessing MC running as a library server.  This appears not to be the case.  We need a different cause for your problem.

2. and 5. You may not understand what the library database is.  When you rip CDs or import files, MC enters the file name and the tag information in a database.  This allows it to respond very quickly when you browse to find a file.  The library database may also contain some fields for which there are no corresponding tags in the music files themselves.  If you are using the default library, it is probably stored in a folder like c:\users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Media Center 22\Library.

3. Note that there are two album Artist fields.  The Album Artist (Auto) field is calculated by MC.  You should be editing the plain Album Artist field.

4. OK.  Flac is a good choice with full support for tags.

6.  I asked for the screenshots for a good reason.  Sometimes when you report that the changes are gone, you are jumping to a conclusion based on what you see in a particular point in MC.  It is very common for new users to misinterpret what they see on the screen.

It will clarify what's going on to see where you were in MC when you were editing tags and where you were when you concluded that the changes you had made were gone.

A screenshot is a copy of what the screen looked like at a point in time.  To get it, press the Print Screen key which should be above the regular alphabetic keys on most keyboards.  (You can hold down the shift or Control key as you press Print Screen.)  This places an image in the clipboard.  Now you use an image editing or paint program to capture the image from the clipboard.  In Windows 10, click on "All programs" in the start menu, then on "Windows accessories" and then "Paint".  Use the paste command to retrieve the image from the clipboard.  You can crop the image to remove the parts of the screenshot you don't need and then save it in a location you can find again with a name that you can recognize.

My first test would be to move the MC  library to the c drive of the computer running jriver

Certainly things like album art don,t sync if you are editing remotely

The db file will be quite small, depending on you collection. Maybe 10 meg at most

Leave the main music files on the Nas. JRiver will import their paths and play normal ly

Sorry for the delay, but I finally got a chance to play around with this over the weekend and you guys were right - it was the location of the library.  It was on the NAS - I moved it to the local drive and all my issues have been resolved.  Thanks so much to everyone for their help and suggestions.   ;D
