Problems with Sending Internet streams via DLNA
« on: February 23, 2017, 02:48:28 pm »

Hi all

Relatively new user here and enjoying the JRiver experience. I have an Intel NUC 6i3 connected via USB to my Dac and hifi and very pleased with the results. My only issue is with sending internet streams via DLNA to other renderers. I have three Frontier Silicon based radios (2 Roberts and 1 Revo) to which I can successfully send any music files, flac or mp3. However whenever I try to send an internet stream such as the BBC radio 320 kbps streams which I have saved in a play list to any of the radios I get an immediate error message pop up "There was a problem controlling the selected DLNA device. Double check your device, server and network settings." I have changed some of the DLNA settings but the result for the streams has always been the same. They do work fine direct to the dac. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.

Ok, as no comments forthcoming I have answered my own question to a degree.

Previous to JRiver I was using Minimserver and Minimstreamer to manage all my music files and internet streams. Its still running on my NAS so I have saved the minimstreamer intenet stream outputs as a playlist (and tagged as an album) in JRiver and am now able to use JRiver to control the dlna renderers and play the internet streams - it works. However I am still reliant on Minimstreamer to achieve what I want and I was hoping to exclusively use JRiver.

So, for those that understand what magic minimstreamer does to the streams, is it something that JRiver can (or could in the future) achieve?

Thanks

I don't know what they are doing to the streams.
We pass the stream URL as is to the DLNA renderer.

If you add the URL to your playlist by doing File->Open Media and check the web options you can get it going and add it to a playlist.
If there is a URL within the URL you may need to strip it out first.

Ok, thanks for that. I have been doing that, and for example I can happily use "Open URL" and add http://stream-uk1.radioparadise.com/aac-320 - the stream for Radio Paradise at 320 kbps and it plays via my dac with no issues.

But if I add it to a playlist and then try to send it to any of my DLNA Renderers, I get the error message from MC. However if I try to do the same with the stream from Minimstreamer, it does work.

Are you able to replicate the same issue when streaming direct from the url via DLNA?

Thanks

Yes but not aac.
I suspect your other server is converting it to mp3 inline.

Minimserver can transcode on the fly but currently I have it set not to transcode and the renderer confirms it is receiving the stream as 320k AAC.

I have some other relatively low quality streams in mp3 that have the same effect if I try to send them to the renderer so I'm happy its not the format that's causing the issue.

Did a little tracing and it looks like it might be a mimetype issue.
Are you familiar with how to do a network trace with wireshark?

No I'm not but quite prepared to find out!

I shall have a look at wireshark.....

What I'd like you to do is trace the play command from the minimstreamer to the rendering device if possible.
To do that you need to have wireshark running on whatever is running the minimstreamer.
After installing it, you start it up, select the interface, add a capture filter which will be really simple, it's just
host 1.2.3.4
where 1.2.3.4 is the IP address of the renderer.
Then start the capture in wireshark.
Send the stream to the renderer with whatever controller you use.
You'll get the transaction between the minimstreamer and the renderer in the capture buffer.
As soon as the stream starts to play, stop the capture or you get a lot of extraneous packets.
Save the trace and email it to me, bob (at) jriver (dot) com.

Thanks!

There are a few issues with the capture.

First, I don't see the renderer on it and
Second, there is data from other hosts because as you said you couldn't get the filter to work.
Third, you can't run the capture on a third box since network switches filter out all traffic that is not broadcast, or sourced or destination to the box you are running the capture on.

Since you can't run wireshark on the NAS easily you need to run it on the NUC PC with MC that you are using as a controller.
Your then add a filter like this:
host 192.168.0.5

Wireshark has changed formats a few times so that method of entering the capture filter has changed some.
If there isn't a lot of NAS traffic to the NUC MC PC you can also do this:
host 192.168.0.5 or host 192.168.0.18
to get the MC controllers traffic to the minimserver and to the roberts radio.

Thanks.

Ok, got that and I'm on it.

I will switch off other items to reduce the network traffic and run it from the NUC.

I will email the result when done...

Bob - the issue with just forwarding the URL over DLNA is we are at the mercy of the end device to support the streams (and format support varies greatly between devices).  I have a range of URLs that just will not play on one device or the other.  It would be GREAT if MC could instead buffer and process the stream through MC's DSP so that instead of sending the URL we could send a converted Audio Steam instead (just like MC does with Audio Files now).

Still trying but having some problems with Wireshark running on the NUC.

I cannot see the network interface of the NUC. Ive tried connecting via wireless and ethernet and cant see either connection interface. Tried turning off the firewall without making a difference. When I first ran Wireshark on my other computer I had the same issue but when I swapped to a wireless interface, all the network connections suddenly appeared on the front page but that hasnt happened on the NUC.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Can I try a different capture prog?

Right, done some research and realise I need to run as administrator and now working.

Now to try and make the filter work....

Do we have any further progress with this?

Have I supplied the required information in the logs?

Thanks

Not right now.
We've had to back burner it for a bit. There is another DLNA issue which is taking up our resources right now.

You could try the latest build 22.0.111 since the internet reader changed quite a lot.

Hi Bob - Unfortunately, no luck. Here are some screenshots. The 320 streams don't work, but the others do.

P.S. I'm sending audio to a dCS Rossini DAC that uses a StreamUnlimited 800 card for it's Ethernet interface (if this makes a difference).

Same as previous - v22 then.

I think I'm right in saying for aac streams to be sent via dlna, they need to use rstp protocol....
