MELCO N1A with JRiver
« on: February 24, 2017, 10:43:13 pm »

So I have a very simple setup. I have a Melco N1A (NAS/USB-DAC Player) connected to my Mytek Brooklen USB-DAC. JRiver is acting as a control point from my laptop. The issue I am running into is that when ever I load the Melco NAS into JRiver it only shows FLAC albums and no DSD albums. I have deleted the program and re-installed everything but whenever I load the Melco N1A library it only shows FLAC files. I have selected the files association option for DSD in JRiver. Bitstream DSD option is also selected. Any thing I am missing here??

You may need to set up auto import under Tools > Import.

You can add or remove folders.  You can edit them to specify file types you want imported.  The wiki has more information.

Thanks,  if I import the library from Melco then the DSD files show up. However this essential passes all traffic through my laptop. Which in turn defeats the purpose of using JRiver as only a control point. Double DSD stutters while playback and I can't even play Quad DSD.

Your setup is unclear to me.  I think the Melco is being used as a NAS device.  What device is connected to the DAC that actually does the playback?  "Control point" doesn't mean anything to me.  Is JRiver MC playing the music, or only acting as some sort of DLNA component?

Melco is connected to the USB-DAC so essentially is working as a player feeding the DAC via its USB. It also acts like a NAS drive. When using DLNA traffic goes straight from the Melco to the the DAC. However if I enable SMB on Melco and import the library into JRiver all traffic is routered through the laptop. I want to use JRiver as just a remote.

I think that's a terrible idea.  But if you really want to do that, then you need to enable DLNA support on your Melco and use MC as a DLNA controller, with the Melco acting as both a DLNA server and renderer.

I don't know if the Melco supports DLNA in this way.  But that's the only way that MC can do what you're asking as far as I know.

Melco supports DLNA, and works both as a server and player. I can connect a USB-DAC directly to the Melco and control it through a UPnP control point. In JRiver when I load the library in MC, I can select Melco which shows up as a DLNA device. Works perfectly, the library on Melco loads within seconds and clicking on Album view I see my 200 albums that are encoded in FLAC. I can select the Mytek DAC which shows up as a player, select an album/song and music starts playing. Very Happy. Why does MC not load the DSD albums in a similar way?

Linn Kinsky desktop app is working perfectly. I can see all the DSD albums and can even play Quad DSD through it. If guys at JRiver can sort this out I would be very happy. Thanks

Can a member of JRiver team please explain why my DSD albums are not being populated over DLNA? Is this a bug and can I expect the team to look into it. I spent £40 on a software and the alternative free one works perfectly. Does sting a little bit. Oh and before anyone comes along and tells me about the free trial I only tested it with 24/192 files and not DSD. I just presumed that if its working with 24/192 it will work with DSD also.

I also have a Melco N1 - I want to control it, but am not a big fan of the newish Melco app - I like JR's format and info better and also want to use my big PC screen; so like suser, I would like to use JR to control the Melco; but unlike suser, I can't get JR to see even my Melco's redbook files. Could somebody provide me a more detailed explanation of how to do this: JR doesn't seem to see the IP address of the Melco, although I have the Melco's drive successfully mapped onto my PC; also I don't see an access key in the Melco's settings; so I can't "add library," which is what intuition (often a poor guide) is telling me to do. But like suser, I only want to use JR as control device; not as a renderer.

Blgentry; why do you say this is a terrible idea?; and do you have a better idea for controlling the Melco from a PC?

Am using Windows 10, which was and may still be a bit sketchy on this kind of network file sharing.

Thanks for any thoughts!

There are three different N1's.  Here's one:
https://www.melco-audio.com/products/n1-mk2/

It says it supports UPnP, which is probably what you need to use MC to control it.  The other choice would be to use it as a NAS drive and import the files directly into MC.

You may need to set it so it works in the UPnP mode.  You could ask Melco.

Edit: Read what they say about Twonky.  That's the software used for UPnP.

Jim -

Indeed, I am having the exact problem you replied to earlier on April 1, 2017 under "Problem with Twonky dlna server in a NAS, can't see all the songs."

Since my Melco app on my iPad can see easily all the songs on the N1, Melco says I have a JRiver problem, not an N1 problem. Based on the other posts, it appears that JRiver has a problem working with Twonky?

You wrote in 2017 not to use DNLA/UPnP on the N1. Could you be a little more specific as to what I would turn off (I think you mean on the N1). Would I try to disable the Twonky on the N1?

But of critical importance is that, in this setup, I want the N1 to be the renderer and the player (to USB DAC), not JRiver. So I don't want to just read the N1's files to play them through JRiver's rendering and the PC it is running on. I paid the big bucks for the Melco's file handling and rendering.

But I would like to control the gig with JRiver.

Will JRiver allow that?

Thanks.

User AndrewFG has a program that can analyze DLNA / UPnP renderers. Please try it and report the results.

I didn't see how to post my test results to his database, so here they are. To my untrained eye, it seems to work, which suggests that WB's app doesn't see the Twonky problem I am having. Recommended settings page was blank.

SOLUTION: Linn Kazoo is free and worked perfectly for me upon loading - I didn't even need to set anything; so while I am a JR fan generally, in this case I will have to use Kazoo.

AndrewFG might be able to tell you more, but some formats are apparently not supported.  Try setting MC to convert.

Almost all my audio files are uncompressed wave redbook, which I am taking to be supported, so I don't think that is the problem.

While I have solved my problem by using Kazoo, it seems like JRiver shouldn't have this problem.

Would love for White Bear to comment if he is watching this thread.

Something that may be working, although very slowly, is for me to map the Melco's files as a network drive onto the computer that is running JRiver and to then import those files into the Melco's library that is seen by JRiver.

But other apps don't need to do this, they just provide instant control over the Melco's resident library without importing it - is JRiver now going to try to render these imported files when I play them? I don't want to use the Melco just as an NAS drive.

AndrewFG is unlikely to see this here.  I'll move it later today.
