Author Topic: MC 22 on Windows 10 Pro x64 has garbled/static audio output with WASAPI [SOLVED]  (Read 6321 times)

Every other output works, but I'm running my digital output (via optical cable) from MSI Z270 Pro Carbon MB Realtek Digital Audio Output to my DacMagic to listen to headphones. This produces a horrible loud static-y and garbled playback of any type of audio file. Direct Sound works fine. I tried Winyl audio software and it has no problems with WASAPI playback with the above mentioned output and sounds significantly better. I just paid about $36 for the upgrade to MC22. If there is no solution to this i would prefer to have my money refunded.

Has anybody run into this and resolved the issue?

I should point out that MC21 had this issue too which is why i upgraded, hoping for a fix.

For everyone in general, in the future I HIGHLY recommend trying the updated major version of MC in a trial first before blindly purchasing an upgrade just to see if things work correctly with your configuration before committing (or if a bug or bugs were fixed).

Also try ASIO if you have a driver available for your DAC. It *may* not be an option though since you're using the onboard Realtek audio of your motherboard. Is there any difference when unchecking the box for exclusive access in WASAPI's device settings? Is S/PDIF bitstreaming enabled?

The OP mentioned it also doesn't work in MC21.

ASIO does work, but offers no improved sound over DirectSound on my system. WASAPI offers massively enhanced dynamic range and soundstage on my system. It was actually through MC that I discovered this on my old PC (Win7x64 + M-Audio Audiophile 192).

So any of your have a confirmed audio card brand that works with WASAPI digital output on MC22 + Win10 x64?

Actually, there should be NO audible improvements or disadvantages to using ASIO vs. WASAPI. They both should exactly sound the same as both bypass the Windows mixer (unless exclusive mode is disabled for WASAPI) and output bit-perfect audio. DirectSound, on the other hand, should probably be avoided completely if you want bit-perfect output even though there's no evidence any of the audio output drivers sound any "better" than the others.

Still, the problem at hand is intriguing. Have you checked your configuration for WASAPI output? A screenshot of your Audio settings (Options > Audio) and WASAPI settings might help.

Have you tried it with Bitstreaming set to S/PDIF?

Solved!!

Bitstreaming suggestion did not work. However I found the source of the problem. It is the Bit Depth (under Realtek Digital Output WASAPI) settings.

The default Bit Depth is set to Auto. I went through them one by one, and found the ones that have problems and two that work. So I picked the highest bitrate of the working ones as my default and now all noise issues are gone:

- Auto (Recommended for Best Sound Quality) = Garbled/Static-ridden sound.
- 32-bit Floating point = App crashes as Audio HW does not support.
- 32-bit Integer = Garbled/Static-ridden sound.
- 24-bit Integer (In a 32-bit package) = Works Perfect!
- 24-bit Integer = Garbled/Static-ridden sound.
- 16-bit Integer = Works Perfect!

Hope this helps others that have run into this issue in the future :).
