I installed JRiver Media Center 22 for Mac recently, found that it could not play videos at all, no matter what format the file is. MKV, no; Rmvb, no; mp4, no. According to the log, it seems that some of the dependencies failed to install.

"Playback: DependencyInstaller::GetInstalledFilename: Failed installing dependency 13, filename="

How can I deal with it?

Do you have internet access on that box? That is required to install dependencies.

Can I download the dependencies first, and then install them locally?

I have. I use Proxifier to force all of the connections of MC to go through a Proxy, still the same problem.

You might try a regular Internet connection, behind your router, instead of a proxy.

I've never seen an issue like this with video with MC for Mac and I have thousands of video files.  I also have a regular Internet connection, behind a router, so I guess all of the component downloads were all done whenever they were necessary, without informing me, because the Internet was available.

As a side note to JRiver:  In today's world of file sizes and disk sizes, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to be downloading components.  Wouldn't packaging all of the necessary components into the installation file make more sense?

I used a proxy because on regular connection, JRiver failed to play any of the local videos, too; and I thought it might be that the f**king GFW blocks some of its connection.

Now I have no idea about why is this happening.

I believe I've read about at least one person who was in China who could not download JRiver components while on a government filtered Internet connection there.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think I remember this from about 8 or 10 months ago.

That should be solved with a proxy internet connection. But no, even with proxy network, problem remains.

I found these lines in the Previous Log file. Why MediaCenter for Mac has DLLs?

Sorry for the problems.

Can you download this file in a web browser?
http://files.jriver.com/dependencies/plugins/avcodec/avcodec_v15.zip

This is the dependency needed for video playback.  It's downloaded once when MC plays a video for the first time.  Then it won't be downloaded again until the version changes.

Thanks, but where should I put these files in?

Did they download OK on the same computer you're running Media Center on?

That's strange, so your browser can download this file but Media Center cannot.  What browser are you using?

Media Center won't run well if it can't access files from "files.jriver.com".  What happens if you run a "check for updates" from Media Center's Help / Update channels / Check for updates...?

Very strange.  I just tested on my computer to make sure the download was working with build 22.0.93 and it worked fine.  I deleted the "mac_avcodec" files that are needed for video playback and then started playing an MKV video and Media Center downloaded the necessary files within a few seconds and started playing.

Please look in this folder and see if there's anything in there:
/Users/<user_name>/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 22/Plugins

There's supposed to be a "mac_avcodec" folder there and several .dylib files inside the folder.

I put downloaded dll files into folder /Users/<user_name>/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 22/Plugins, and finally Media Center starts playing videos.

But strangely there is no sound output.

Audio output is Okey now, a little problem with my machine.

I wonder if there's anything unusual about the permissions on your "J River/Media Center 22/Plugins" folder?  Somehow, it sounds like MC either couldn't download a zip file to that folder, or couldn't unzip the file after it downloaded.  It seems like you may encounter further problems with other plugin files that MC tries to download, or when the version of mac_avcodec changes.  You can check permissions on the "Plugins" and "mac_avcodec" folders using "get info" in Finder, or "ls -la" in a terminal window.

OK, everything looks fine there assuming you're logged in as AKIDO when you run Media Center.

I guess if you run into this problem again I could send you a special MC build with a bunch of extra debug logging to try to pinpoint the problem.
