DAC bit depth
« on: April 12, 2017, 06:35:54 am »

Hello,

I have a miniDSP U-DAC8

If I use WASAPI JRiver tells me that the output format is 24-bit padded which I believe means that it is sending out 24-bit wrapped in 32-bit
If I use ASIO it tells me the output is 32-bit

My question is: in ASIO mode shall I switch on the "Device uses only most significant 24 bits (Lynx, etc)" or not?

Thank you in advance

Yes, you want to check "Device uses only most significant 24 bits" since the DAC chip is 24-bit. If you don't check "Device uses only . . . " then the DAC will truncate to 24-bit for output without any dithering.

The reason ASIO typically uses 32-bit output is that many pro audio devices that use ASIO have internal DSP. More processing is going to happen before the audio device dithers to 24-bit for output.
