I've been playing with Replay Gain (RG) today.  The idea is great.  I've struggled over the years to get the level right between tracks on compilations, I've gotten pretty good at it using Goldwave, but not perfect.  I want perfect....

Some albums are hot and others very low in level, something to fix the difference would be great.  Replay Gain looks at each track and determines an adjustment PER SONG.  That is not right.  The levels between tracks on the same albums should never be changed relative to each other.  Replay Gain adjusts different tracks differently on tracks from the same album.

There needs to be a way to select a number of tracks and have it analyze those tracks as a unit and apply one adjustment for the whole track set.

I think I can do this manaully by adjusting the tags to one adjustment level for a whole album, but that is quite tedious.

And it seems Replay Gain never applies more gain to a track, it only lowers the gain.  Meaning that the output from MC is always lower than any other input to my audio system.  My preamp will let me adjust each input differently, so I could equalize levels between the FM tuner and MC with Replay Gain, but then when I turn Replay Gain off, MC blasts compared to the tuner.

Is there a way to set the base level for Replay Gain?  Something to fix the huge difference in level between Replay Gain and no Replay Gain is needed.

How do others deal with this level difference?

It seems as if MC9 supports only "Radio" Replay Gain adjustment, and not "Audiophile" Replay Gain adjustment.

Currently MC doesn't have an album gain option. The only way to deal with it is to turn off the RG DSP when listening to albums or (if you are using MP3) use MP3gain.

MCs RG uses 83dB as the target gain level, which is what was suggested in the original Replay Gain specs, I believe.

Not for analyzation, but you can adjust the output in the Replay Gain DSP. I have mine set to a fixed +6dB, which raises the level from 83dB to 89dB. It seems to be a good compromise between to low and too high. Also, 89dB is what most of the other Replay Gain implementations use.

Thanks everyone for the information.

So, to make Replay Gain really useful, we need an AlbumReplayGain so it analyzes all the tracks on the album as a unit and make one only one setting for the entire album, insuring that the relative volume between tracks never changes.

And audiphile options, not just radio.

I've played around some more with Replay Gain, I've turned it off, not really usable for my purposes.

I can't seem to find a way to change any of the values it sets.

So I can't set a full album to a single adjustment level, meaning  individual songs on a single album will have different adjustment values.  Can't use this.....

You can use MP3Gain to alter your files. I do not like this because it does just that, alter.

Option B: Try foobar. It does tag based Replay Gain. And it will do both Album Gain and Track Gain (radio). Note: Unless you want your tags (mp3 ID3v2.x) erased, turn off the option to remove them. foobar will add an APEv2 tag that contains the gain info. It is only readable in foobar, for now (begs for this option in MC). Both tags can coexist peacefully, and files with these should not be a problem with a portable. Mine just ignores them.
