video plays in vlc not mc
« on: September 16, 2017, 11:16:30 am »

I've ripped almost my entire library of ~1000 DVDs and this is the first time I've encountered this. One mkv rip won't play in MC but plays fine in VLC.

What are the best initial troubleshooting steps?

I'm not sure, but maybe this would prove useful:

In VLC open the Media Information window (Window > Media Information) and see what the video and audio formats are set to.

In MC, open the Tagging Window and look for the field called [Compression].  See what's listed there.  Maybe paste in those values here in the forum.  You might also look at the [Dimensions] of the video both in VLC and in MC's Tagging Window.

Okay, you helped me to sorta figure it out. I guess it's the DTS track that's causing a problem in MC. Not sure why yet, but thanks! I'll have to continue down that path to solve it. :)

So, if I enable bitstreaming, it works fine. If not, no dice. Thoughts?

Hmm.  I use MC for Mac primarily.  But it plays every DTS track I throw at it (in movies), as well as DTS-HD MA.

Maybe it's some oddball 4.1 or 4.0 track or something.  I had a DVD a while back that had a track like that and MC wouldn't play the audio; just the video.  I got rid of that DVD and bought the movie on BluRay instead.

Is your computer connected to the Internet?  I know that MC dynamically downloads some CODECs and needs the internet in order to get them.  Maybe DTS is one of those?

No I have plenty of DTS content that works. Must be something about the channels like you said. Hm. Wish I had more tools available to diagnose and deal with this nonsense.

Maybe take a closer look at the Media Info window in VLC.  It shows me something like:  3F/2R/LFE for the DTS track I tried.  MC shows 5.1, which agrees with VLC in this case.

MKVToolNix or MediaInfo (standalone program) might give you additional details.

Interesting. I opened the file in MKVToolnix and it doesn't even show the DTS track there. Now I'm really confused.

Corrupted MKV structure or something?  You might consider re-ripping the disc if you still have it.

I've re-ripped it 3 times, 2 different programs. Only thing that worked was to re-encode the DTS as FLAC.

Weird.  I wonder what's so strange out this DVD?  Feel free to keep it to yourself, but I'm curious, what is the DVD?  ...and what program are you using to rip it?

This is the first disc/film in the "Alien Quadrilogy" box set. I've used Handbrake and MakeMKV both to rip it, same results both ways.

If re-encoding it to FLAC worked, I guess that's a solution.  These kinds of problems always make me want to find the real cause.  As a technician I used to work with used to say, "I *need* to know!"  :)

Glad you have a solution for your (literally) 1 in 1000 problem!

Thanks, I feel the same, I'd rather get the DTS track working and know what the issue was. But without a lot of tedious handholding on your part, that's unlikely to happen. I feel weird having ONE file in my library that uses FLAC format.
