64-bit cannot stream videos via JRemote (iOS)
« on: October 10, 2017, 05:50:45 am »

It's been an issue from the very first build, but I'm still having trouble streaming videos to JRemote when the 64-bit build is running.
I just get a blank screen and playback never starts.
If I switch to 32-bit, videos stream without issue. Audio works whether 64 or 32 bit.

Video streaming works just fine for me in 64-bit. In fact, the responses the server sends are perfectly identical to 32-bit.
Make sure your server can access the internet, as it may need to install additional plugins for streaming.

It has access to the internet, and video playback works fine locally. It's only streaming to JRemote where I have this problem.

I just get a blank screen and playback never starts.

To this day - I have this issue using the standard 32 bit version of JRiver.

I have never been able to get a single MKV rip to behave with JRemote so I now use another 3rd party player to watch movies on the iPad.

What formats are you guys using that actually do stream properly to a JRemote enabled device? Just supported Apple formats?

It never worked consistently for me neither (up until MC22, then I gave up) and showed a black screen only. I played MKV's.

Well that got me thinking and I did some more testing:
Videos which require transcoding to play - DVD rips to MKV for example - start playing after a couple of seconds.
Videos which do not require transcoding to play - H.264 encoded MP4 files with AAC audio - do not play at all from the 64-bit server.

Oh, sorry. I did not wrote that. It has the same behavior here. I tested also the same MP4s on iPhone an iPad directly. Of cause it is okay. I have IOS 11beta sind beta 3. Maybe this is the point.

Can one of you post a log from the server of a case that fails?

This appears to be the same problem that I've been having with the 32-bit version of MC 23.  The last build that streamed these files to JRemote successfully for me was Build 48.

It seems rather doubtful that 32-bit works and 64-bit doesn't, at least in the same version. Perhaps you just didn't update 32-bit for testing to the same build.

It looks like JRemote for iOS used a somewhat wrong MCWS call to get the original video file for mp4 files to avoid transcoding (ie. it didn't simply request the file, but used a profile which at the time didn't transcode, but was not meant to be used by JRemote, but by WebGizmo instead), and when this call was updated for Panel to output a format Panel can play, it stopped working.

Sorry if I may not have stated it clearly, but no, 32-bit does *not* work for me in the same version as the 64-bit version, not that my 32-bit version works in contrast to the 64-bit version.  I'm having the same problem with the 32-bit version as is reported for the 64-bit version with the same kind of files.

Yeah that was mostly aimed at the other reporters, where claims of 64-bit only were made.

We'll probably try to fix this in MC, restore the call JRemote used to its old behavior and introduce a new one for Panel, to avoid such conflicts.

My 32-bit install had not been updated since 23.0.45 - which I guess was around when the 64-bit build was released.
After updating it to 23.0.70, I can confirm that it also won't play videos which don't require any transcoding.

Also fixed EOS playback for Ultra BD content (well I think it was this anyway).
