Hi Hendrik,

as an author of LAV Filter: what settings do you use/recommend when playing back video?

I don't think it's that simple as just recommending "global" settings. It's very likely GPU (Intel, AMD and Nvidia) is also a factor in what recommended settings you should use.

Here is what I do.  Start with Default Settings and with the madVR OSD up play your "toughest" video (eg on a 1080p display, say a 1080/60i Blu ray or 4K Blu ray).  If it plays without dropping frames, try JINC, still OK, try NGU and start moving it up from Low, to Med, to High on Luma.  Then repeat with Chroma.  If you end up with a setting that you want but it "just" drops frames then play with the other settings to see if you can tweak it so it does not drop frames.  Then ignore and enjoy the movie.

You will get the best deinterlacing if you use a custom video mode in JRiver and a separate installation of LAV Filters and Weston Three Field (complex) software deinterlacing. This will then free up some GPU performance in madVR.

For "toughest" video, you want one with less resolution than your display. MadVR has less work to perform if the video resolution already matches the output resolution (no scaling is required, assuming no supersampling).

There are no universal "best" settings for MadVR. The algorithms all inherently involve tradeoffs between sharpness, performance, and artifacts. Only you can determine the "best" settings for your eyes, hardware limitations, and display.
