I solved my own problem. Apparently the add to a playlist feature only works when authentication is set up on the music server. There is a pop up window which appears when you try to rate a song telling you this, but there is no pop up when you try to add a song to a playlist. In fact the ops up says it has been added, when it actually has not.
Now that i've set up authentication, everything is working well.
