video stutter on skull canyon
« on: November 03, 2017, 10:19:33 pm »

Hello,

Does anyone have madvr configuration for skull canyon NUC - kaby lake Intel Core i7-6770HQ Intel Iris Pro 580 GPU Win 10 Pro.
Monitor is 8bit Dell UP2716D via Display Port.

When I play 4k videos I get video stutter and dropped frames.

Thanks Much.

Did you change any of the madVR settings? If so, reset them and try again. Are your buffers filling up? The internal GPU might be too weak.

IMO, the iGPU is too weak to handle 4K.

Copy/paste those questions into google. That should give you the desired information.

Likely the Nvidia 1000 series (e.g. 1060, 1070, 1080, etc.) - not sure about any of AMD's current Polaris or Vega GPUs. But you can't install a PCI-E GPU in a NUC (unless it has support for a eGPU via Thunderbolt - I believe only a couple do). IMO, current NUCs (which all have weak iGPUs) are terrible choices for 4K playback, especially if you want 10-bit. Personally if I was going to do madVR 4K (and 10-bit, etc.) I'd build a small HTPC using a small case, a mid-range Intel Core-i5 or a higher end Core-i7 8000 series CPU with a Z370 series mATX motherboard and a 1000 series Nvidia GPU (along with like 16GB or RAM or more).

What do you think about this?

I think this, or something similar looks like the way forward for 4k viewing..

It looks like it only supports single slot PCI-E graphics cards, which limits your GPU choices considerably.

Thanks guys. Kinda what I thought that no readily available NUC's exist that are as small as Skull Canyon with it's variety of ports (Thunderbolt, USBC, Displayport, etc.)
