[Feature Request] Limit max sample rate and bit depth
« on: November 17, 2017, 07:41:46 am »

Sometimes it happens that a device reports frequencies it actually doesn't support or, more often, some audio interfaces/DACs support up to xxx Khz but they don't work correctly at the higher sample rates (hiccups, noise, etc...).

It would be useful to put an option to set a maximum allowed sample rate and bit rate so that if you try to play a 192 Khz track, and your DAC supports up to 192 Khz but doesn't work correctly at that rate, you can set in the options a maximum allowed sample rate of 96Khz and the track will get downsampled to that rate.

Same goes for bit depth.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

For sample rates DSP Studio > Output Format is what you want. I set all sample rates above 192kHz to be resampled to 192kHz (and all sample rates below 44.1kHz to be resampled to 44.1kHz). The rest are unchanged.

IMO Bit-depth doesn't matter too much (unless you're downsampling), but you can set a limit for it too for each output driver (e.g. WASAPI or ASIO) via MC's Options > Audio > Device settings... and depending if you're using WASAPI (the Bitdepth dropdown menu)...

Or ASIO (via its own Driver Control Panel) and the Bit-Depth dropdown menu...

Depends on your output driver of choice. I think it works for DirectSound and Kernel Streaming as well if you're using one of those.

Great advice...as always ;D

I somehow misunderstood how that part of DSP worked, I thought it would resample everything to the selected sample rate. My bad on that!

On bit depth, I'm on Mac (yeah yeah I know I should have posted that on the Mac forum, but I though this would help many users on Win as well), so I don't have that setting available, this is why most other audio players on Mac have the feature to let you set maximum bit depth.

Anyway, thanks for the reply, I'll look into DSP studio and set it accordingly!

You can try opening up the Audio MIDI Setup app on the Mac to set a max sample rate/bit-depth for your DAC there.

Otherwise MC *should* handle the bit-depth automatically for you.
