Question on "Tagging": Library, Files
« on: December 01, 2017, 09:34:13 am »

Hi

when are the Tags written to:
1) Library
2) embedded in File (flac for example)

When I "Open File" and the tag for example "ARTIST" is the TAG written to the File and to the Library or only to Library or only to File (assume its a flac or mp3)?

When I go to "Audio", then select Files. I again tag "ARTIST", is the TAG written to the File and to the Library or only to Library or only to File (assume its a flac or mp3)?

There is a tool "write tags to library from files" and the vice versa tool "write tags for library to files", in which case do I need them?

in tools>options>library & Folders>...manage library fields

each tag has a check box "save into file (when possible)"

if checked, that tag will be always saved into the file  (if possible).  Default behaviour is many of the standard tags (artist, album, etc.) are checked to go into the files

if you have a file with tags that you are happy with you can use "to library from files" and the library will update.  if you have files that you aren't sure that the tags are indeed embedded in the file, use "to files from library"

the file will only be written if the check box is checked

You can see the tags that are stored in the file by looking at Tag Dump at the bottom of the tagging window.

Hi

thanks for the great advice.  I was not aware that each tag can be separately decided to save or not nor where the function was.

It looks that default settings just are right.
Indeed the "check function" is very useful to be sure that tag is in.
