No Sound After Update
« on: January 06, 2018, 07:30:20 am »

Running Windows 7 on a HTPC with a Yamaha RX-A1060 receiver. After updating to latest jriver version, my HTPC will no longer recognizes my receiver and I lose sound. After I rolled back to date prior to JRiver update everything works fine. Tried updating jriver twice and both times the latest update caused my HTPC to no longer recognize receiver.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Greg

Did you try setting audio up again?  The wiki has a topic.

Yes, but can’t get past step one because the jriver update causes my operating system to not recognize my receiver. Therefore there is no sound system to setup.

Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Media Center 23?

My OS is 64 bit, but how do I determine what Media Center bit version I have?  Tried looking for it under the help tab, but all it tells me is I am currently using Media Center version 23.0.73.

thanks

Help>About Media Center....at the very top if it's x64 it will say it....if it's not x64 it just tells ya what version you have installed

Under Help > About Media Center... is the easiest way to find out

If you're using the 64-bit build it'll say (64-bit) in the title, like so below... If it doesn't you're using the 32-bit build.

If you are using the 64-bit build then I recommend trying the 32-bit build instead. I'm not sure about receivers and if they have/need drivers on a PC, but if so it could simply be they lack 64-bit drivers.

Based on above, since I couldn’t find any mention of 64 bit, I am currently using the 32 bit version. Never had an issue with my receiver and sound until the latest media center update. Spent a whole weekend trying to determine what knocked out my sound.  Finally as a last resort rolled back my system to a previous date and had sound.  As soon as I updated media center again it was gone.

Something in the update is causing my PC to not see the receiver. It defaults to my Epson  8350 projector which has no sound device. Until now, been using media center for years without issue.

Any other suggestions from support, or have I hit a dead end with this issue and can no longer update media center?

Thanks

This may be the problem.  It isn't a JRiver problem.

Try Windows > Control Panel > Sounds.  You can test sound output there.  It has to work there before it will work in JRiver.

Not trying to be rude, but how can you say that? Did you read my prior posts?  Update media center, my PC does not recognize my receiver therefore can't check sound output.  Roll back update, PC recognizes receiver and sound returns.  May be wrong, but does not sound like an issue with my PC.

Did you try what I suggested?  You need to make sure that sound works at all, and then look at MC's settings.

I have never experienced updating MC affecting Windows features or devices. I have seen a video/HDMI driver update change the default audio device to my TV (which doesn't have sound either). Regardless of the cause of this change, you should easily be able to reset it using the steps Jim sent (Windows button > Control Panel > Sounds ). Once on the playback screen you should see the devices that are available (the receiver should be one of them). Click on it and set as default.
