[Feature Request] Web browser improvements
« on: March 09, 2018, 01:27:28 am »

Two things:

  • MC's web browser should have an option to be full-screened. Currently, there appears to be no discernible way to hide the header.
  • MC's web browser should be able to interface with video and audio recording devices (webcams, microphones, et cetera). This would make it viable for services like Rabb.it.

For personal background, my primary web browser is Microsoft Edge. Just my preference. However, I must use Chrome for Rabb.it because it lacks support for Edge for...whatever reason. I use that service frequently to watch things with people from a distance, in conjunction with Panel and otherwise, and it is virtually the only reason I retain Chrome. It would be cool to further centralise it to MC.

MC has two web browser engine choices available; Internet Explorer and Chromium (with IE being the default). Getting Netflix/Amazon Prime video/etc. working through MC requires use of the Chromium engine (and the Widevine CDM plugin).

More specifically, the Chromium support in MC uses the Chromium Embedded Framework. I'm not sure if CEF supports what you're requesting or not, but if not it'd likely be up to CEF to support it so MC could too.

Okay. I see that said plug-in is installed with Chrome.

Is there something I need to do to get it to work in MC—assuming that it isn't already? Further, if I removed Chrome, would the plug-in be removed as well?

Hmmmm, not sure if Widevine plugin download works currently in MC since CEF doesn't download Winevine anymore through the component updater. Looks like Google requires the client application (MC in this case) to implement the download mechanism with permission given from Google to use it. Not sure if MC's CEF implementation has been updated to account for this or not, Hendrik would know for sure. But it sounds pretty complicated to me now.

*If* it works, it *could* potentially work for MC for Mac too (don't think Widevine via CEF on Linux is supported... yet), assuming they'd ever gain CEF support (I don't think they do right now - probably Windows only).

That's a completely different thing, I'd start a new topic about that.

AFAIK, you can already do this by using an external encoder (the Nero one). I think I've seen a recent topic about it.

So I would like to revive this, emphasising point #1 in the OP. Webcam/microphone access through JRiver's Chromium engine implementation would be really, really cool, but I wouldn't call it as essential a feature as a full-screen/maximisation mode for said browser, in both standard view and theatre view.

What this would effectively do is remove every issue y'all have ever had with integration with services with non-public API's, such as Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube, sans Gizmo-like swipe scrolling and input. All that any of us would have to do is define the appropriate web site links in the links bar and/or theatre view options; check a box that says, "Run browser in full-screen for this item"; and boom! We now have service centralisation without you having to pay egregious licensing fees and sky-rocket the price of MC licences.

It helps that www.youtube.com/tv exists. Currently, it can be added as a theatre view item, but theatre view doesn't maximise it for some reason. Netflix's web site look-and-feel is also appropriate enough for a ten-foot interface, albeit that you might need a remote that supports mouse input/emulation/whatever the proper term is. RealVNC Viewer on Android, running with access to RealVNC Server on the HTPC (assuming living room implementation without keyboard/mouse input of its own) is a good example.

Bonus points if the MC browser engines can save and retain cookies, so that one could remain logged in to YouTube TV when one closes and re-opens it.

Can this be done? I know that not everyone has an external remote software implementation, but I figure that if JRiver bothers to include support for DVD's and BD's unlocked via external DRM removal tools such as AnyDVD HD, it's certainly not unreasonable to say it could support web browser features that complement the use of said external remote software implementations.

This one has been requested multiple times and would be fantastic.

An app launcher that can be called from Theatre View for Youtube already exists.

It works full screen and saves log ins

Thank you guys for enabling full-screen browsing! This looks a lot better. :)
Would it be possible to hide the ribbon interface in full screen as well, perhaps as a check box option in Options? See the top of the attachment.
Also, might I suggest a(n addable) Streaming item in Theatre View?

Additionally, is it possible to add webcam and microphone support to the browser? I'd love to have that support for Rabbitcasting. See the lower left of the attachment.
