SSA/ASS subtitles
« on: March 30, 2018, 02:06:46 pm »

Full support of SSA/ASS subtitle features would be nice (not just text ... where I come from we love karaoke lol)

Not as easy as I thought ... even finding specs for SSA/ASS is not easy

I've been lurking for a while now trying to find a solution to this issue. Is there really no way to just disable JRiver Subtitle Renderer/use VSFilter?
It doesn't seem to work if I try to add it as a custom filter (standard or HQ).
It doesn't work either if I try to add a separate LAV splitter in front of it either.

All I can find is someone saying not to override what MC uses, but when things look like picture attached, it really leaves much to be desired.

Of course hard coded subs can't be turned off....worth a mention hey!

Just use MPC-HC for that
JRiver will NEVER properly support SSA/ASS subtitles.

NEVER is a very long time lol

I know MPC-HC works (I have it installed) ... it just would be nice to have all media under one roof ... I have not got time atm to play around with MC24 (work plus new server arriving soon) ... but when I do, I will test MC24 for SSA/ASS subtitle support ... which feature works and which doesn't ... its a start

I had a discussion about SSA/ASS support with Matt several years ago,  although I'm not sure if any more progress has been made independently since then (I don't typically watched subtitled stuff anymore).

The general problem is that the spec itself appears to have some wiggle room and things change,  and then there are other things to consider like rendering intent.

At some point in the past I DO believe I had a filter chain setup within MC to disable it's own subtitle rendering and load XYVSfilter.    But I don't remember how I did it.

Is subtitle rendering being worked on, or a way to select an external renderer like xy-VSFilter (dead project now?) or AssFilterMod?

Here are some samples that don't render correctly and drop hundreds of frames every second when they appear.
