Play Not Working

I try to play an audio track and it skips two seconds into the track and stops - not playing, no sound, frozen two seconds into the track.

OK.  Please describe your setup.  Audio device, etc.  One machine or two?  DLNA?

We have a laptop running JRiver. We have an external HD with about 2T of wav files attached via USB port. The laptop is running under Windows 7
