NEW: Radio Paradise
« on: April 19, 2018, 08:43:33 am »

We've added support for Radio Paradise, a listener supported streaming radio station from California.  You can read about the requests for this here.

Many thanks to Bill Goldsmith of RP, who provided enough technical information that we could get it going.

RP is an eclectic mix of new and old, with a tilt toward its California roots.  Highly recommended.

Instructions
You'll find Radio Paradise under the new Streaming section in JRiver.  Click on Streaming, then on the RP button.

as a long time RP listener, I'd say it has a broad eclectic mix, not just California

Good Day All,

First of all, thank you, thank you, thank you for adding RP (and thanks to RP as well)! Great addition and the FLAC version is so much better than the normal MP3 (which I believe they are still using for Bluesound, mine now being eliminated).

As to the question and I am not sure if I should have posted this in the "remote" section but I cannot get to the streaming section on either Gizmo or JRemote (on Android). Is this being worked on for the future? If not, please put it on the request list. I don't have a monitor in my main zone and rely exclusively on my tablet for control and I'm sure there are others as well.

Thanks again!

Andy

Takes a while to connect and buffer through cos' my internet connection is so 20th century but it gets there eventually.

I'll give this a bit of a listen and see how I go. Thanks for the option devs.

Just click it on the Streaming page that's at the root.  There's no page to show for it.

JRiver Media Center 24.0.25 --
Changed: Radio Paradise starts with the first track and then loads subsequent tracks in a background thread instead of the main thread.

Doesn't work good for Radio Paradise.  Stop after 5 ,15 ,20 Minutes. Can not have a continuous correct listening . Really bad because this new function of jriver is really great !

I've had the good fortune to live in a couple of places that were as eclectic and music loving as Radio Paradise. Today they went from a Dire Straits cut to a Paul Simon, then Benny Goodman's Bolero, a ukulele "somewhere over the rainbow" and then Camper Van Beethoven. And it f-ing flowed.

Since discovering RP slightly over a year ago, they've become my all day background. This simplifies listening to them. Much appreciated.

I think both of you have similar values. All about the joy of music.

Any idea how to control Radio Paradise from JRemote?

There must be a lot of users with headless PC's, only controlled via JRemote. JRemote would not have to show all the details like track list, next track etc. I would be happy with a simple start/pause/stop. Is this possible? Anybody working on it? Please, please ... make Radio Paradise in FLAC quality available to JRemote users.

As a long-term kitchen radio listener to Radio Paradise in the UK I have to say that I'm impressed with the progress that JRiver have made in integrating this station into MC24.  The latest release is improved (and sounds great via the main HiFi), and like others, I still experience one or two gaps in the music just before the track changes - is this a gapless problem as on their MP3 stream there is/was always a similar issue with playing something like Pink Floyd's DSOTM?

Besides incredible musical programming, Radio Paradise also has an excellent hi-def photo slideshow to accompany the music selection.

It would be wonderful if you could incorporate that slideshow into your MC24 Radio Paradise flac player.

With recent updates MC's handling of Radio Paradise is much improved, but one thing that seems to trip it up is when the station plays one of their 7 second Listener-supported sections, this at best causes a long gap in playback or a stream hang.

Radio Paradise support for JRiver is a fantastic addition and is a big sound improvement over the already very good 320k.
One problem I have noticed since upgrading from 24.0.25 to 30 is that now when I click the RP logo in streaming instead of loading the whole playlist it now only loads one song at a time I have several PCs running JRiver and the results are the same.
Please help me resolve this frustrating new 'feature'.

I think if you leave it longer then it does populate the list. They modified it for licensing reasons I seem to recall.

Correct.
This is a problem I have been experiencing since upgrading to 24.0.30 -yes the 24.0.25 did take a couple of minutes to populate but the 24.0.30 version will only load 1 song no matter how long I leave it. its a definite change from the previous version.
A real fix would be better than a real guess.

@nickt1, I think they had to change it due to licensing reasons. Chances are there's probably nothing to fix and it has to be that way. But if it's not loading at all, might wanna check the firewall.

JimH, please tell me - normal operation of the Radio Paradise depends on the bit depth of the OS - 32 or 64?... Thanks...

32-bit/64-bit OSes are different than the bit-depth of audio. When 32-bit/64-bit (or x86, x86_64, i386, AMD64, etc.) is used to describe an OS it's actually describing the CPU instruction set architecture. Radio Paradise should work in MC regardless if a 32-bit/64-bit OS is used.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64

And here's bit-depth of audio:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_bit_depth

Completely different things. :)

Big fan of RP
These streams provide great playback in MC24 with really good fidelity at 320k
http://stream-tx3.radioparadise.com/aac-320
http://stream-dc1.radioparadise.com/aac-320

URL pasted as item in MC playlist provides seamless playback pleasure with predictable results

Streaming RP in FLAC is different experience...(pilot error?)

Fidelity and track data display experience is fantastic - but most of track #1 downloads prior to playback (delayed start)?

Track #1 then plays well (very well, indeed) - until final ~10 secs and playback stops.

Next, new track #2 identified (in Playing Now) - and then it downloads in full (~25sec) before playback resumes (remaining 10sec of first track?? and all but ~10sec track #2).

I have also noticed there is a "Radio Paradise" playlist (starts EMPTY under Playlist Section) that "auto fills" with tracks (FLAC) from RP when RP FLAC streaming service is played???
Almost like using Play Doctor?.

I am able to select and play any track in this "auto list", but must wait for download of full track selected.

I have 8Mb's DSL from my local provider and run Win10 64 and MC 24.0.30 (64).

I am curious if any other users are experiencing both the lag in playback and autofill "RP playlist" phenomena when using RP FLAC streaming?

Most grateful for any assistance

This is a low speed for the flaс stream, which has its own rate of about 1Mb/s

Thanks for the response!
Inferior download speed is a major handicap.

The RP 320k stream plays well with good quality and 0 issues.
Download is constant ~40KBs and a no-brainer

FLAC "streaming" architecture is different somehow.
Typical FLAC file  860k (~30MB) can be downloaded in ~30sec @1MBs (or ~8Mbs)
My RP stream does just that! ...at the end of each track with playback paused ~25-30sec?
Average track length ~3min with plenty of time to buffer next track during normal playback ?

Thanks for the help.
Perhaps, a change in buffering or other setting modification ?

For those who would like to play Radio Paradise via JRemote. It does seem possible.
Look under Playlists in JRemote, to find Radio Paradise.

If it can't be found then it can be added.
In Media Centre select Streaming and then Radio Paradise. When RP is playing, right-click the green arrow and select send to/ playlist. Create a new playlist. JRemote should now make it available under Playlists.

24.0.34 (64-bit) shows new buffering pattern for sure.  Initial Playback commences sooner. Pulsing "batch" download pattern with much higher bit rate ~250kB with variation ranging from ~150kB-660kB.

Playback still stops at current track end - for big download @1MB (continuous)...
Playback resumes ~25sec later - after the big continuous dump for "next" track?

Thanks for feedback

Radio Paradise is working fine here.

Make sure you don't have the program set to stop after each track in Player > Repeat > Stop After Each Item.

Thanks Matt.
My system was...
"Player/Repeat/Repeat Off"
Willing to try any other settings you may think of.

Playing any selected FLAC song in Radio Paradise playlist - required full song download.
Just like gap for my normal subsequent track playback gap. Although "Buffering..." is now displayed in title bar until full track is downloaded.  Then Playback resumes automatically
