New user questions
« on: April 22, 2018, 10:01:55 pm »

I am new to computer audio in general and will be trying JRiver for the 30 day trial starting in the next day or so.  I am a Mac user (High Sierra).  I’m assuming that I should use MC23 as it’s fully developed, correct?

1. Does any action I take in JRiver change the source files?  I seem to have read that it will write tags to the source files is that correct?

2. Is it possible that MC can delete source files?  If so, what parameter do I set to make sure that cannot happen?

3. Initially, I would like to control all importing, manually.  Is that possible?

4. I seem to remember reading on one of the threads that when MC first loads, you have something like 45 secs. to stop auto import from initiating.  Is this true and if so, how do I do that?

5. I’ve just purchased an exaSound e38 and would like to take advantage of the ASIO drivers.  I understand that MC does not support ASIO for Mac.  I’d like to cast my vote for adding it.

Thanks,

Kurt

Hi Kurt, welcome and good luck. First, I'll note that activity on MC23 forum has slowed because they've moved onto MC24. I do think starting with a fully mature version like MC23 is best for newbies as you don't want to be fighting bugs while you're trying to understand computer audio and MC "the beast" of all media apps. If you're still unsure of your purchase after your eval, you might be able to trial a different version for another 30 days or ask the admins for for an extension. How is your eval progressing?

I'm a novice user after 4 years, here're my answers:

1. Yes! MC can certainly change or delete your files! There are good menu prompts to help avoid accidents, such as "are you sure?". Do pay attention and you'll probably be fine. Anything that says convert should be avoided until you have more confidence.

2. See above, not sure how to prevent it other than backing up your entire file system and library. We should all do that, seriously and there are good forum threads on how.

3 and 4. Yes, I do this for sound quality and control.
Tools > Options > Library & Folders . AutoImport

5. Sweet DAC! You may find MC to be your ideal home for all the flexibility dealing with many file formats. I saw something about ASIO on MC24 forum for MAC, might try asking your future questions there and noting that you're trialing MC23. I don't do ASIO for Mac and plan to switch to Windows or linux soon, again for SQ and support.

Honestly, I'd recommend using MC24 for Mac over MC23 for Mac due to the bug fixes it has in regards to some Mac issues (e.g. video crashes, for example), that MC23 for Mac won't get (since development of MC23 has ended).

I defer to the Donkey's awesome experience vs mine. My DAC is direct connected to a 300W power amp and I use MC's internal volume control so I'm very cautious about any new digital glitches or stability issues in low release numbers.

I also wanted mention the obvious way to change your files which you asked about which is tagging. If you're unsure, don't' do that.
