Implementation Help Needed
« on: September 18, 2018, 11:53:05 am »

Hi all. I have the equipment below and need some implementation advice and workflow on how to use the latest JRiver program. What is the most optimal way to use JRiver with the NAS and rest of the system? I also have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 that I can use with the JRiver program.

Do I really need a HTPC with HDMI 2.0 or will the Displayport 1.2 with a active converter to HDMI work for HDR content?

Marantz 8805
ROKU Ultra
Oppo 203
Sony TV 75X940e
QNAP NAS TVS-EC880 (Xeon 3.5ghz quad core, 16gb ram)
HTPC Dell M4700 Laptop (Intel I7 2.7ghz, 16gb ram, AMD Firepro M4000 Mobility Pro graphics card 1.2 Displayport output, 1.4 HDMI)

from what i remember 1.4 supports 4k at 20+ fps at 8 bit ... so for movies its fine (50 and 60 fps will not work at RGB or 4:4:4 ... might work at 4:2:0) ... 1.4 support for HDR depends on your hardware and drivers (if i recall correctly PS4 with its HDMI 1.4 was able to do to do HDR ... some hardware can do Dolby Vision with 1.4 ... so ability is there ... whether its implemented in hardware/driver another story)

Worst come to worst ... ROHQ mode for video can map HDR content to SDR (so you dont get wash out colors)

Map NAS as network drive on HTPC ... then add appropriate folders there to AutoImport in JRiver library

Personally i prefer to run JRiver that holds main library as dedicated PC (not laptop) ... that PC can be HTPC too ... for best result, at least NVidia 1060 (there are cases that allows use of these without fan ... the price is not cheap though for these)
